  • Contractor nightmare-time to rip out and start over

Long story short we paid a contractor to install a pair of pre-hung french doors with matching side lites. The install went from bad to worse. From cutting down the side lites and trying to center them vertically with the french doors and then sheet rocking all around then instead of case molding them in, to not shimming the doors between the added framing, and not even removing the corner guards prior to blending old and new sheet rock....thus causing humps in the wall. Then the contractor painted over stain grade french doors and side lites without removing the overspray from the texture gun or any dirt from the overall install.

So now we have a set of useless sidelites, doors that don't close properly, did I mention none of the 4 dummy handles installed are at the same position on the doors. The spray and drag texture looks like the machine threw up all over the sheet rock and then was smeared all over by a kindergartener.

We now have to hire a contractor to demolition the work just done, and install everything again properly this time. Not to mention buying another pair of side lites to match the french doors.

    Lesson learned:

    1. Don't fall victim to the friend of a friend helping another one of their church-goer buddies.
    2. Don't think a contractor is completely capable of fixing the issues down the road. They will only try to cover up their mistakes.
    3. Don't go with a contractor who doesn't have a portfolio or some sort of pictures of previous work; along with referrals.
    4. Lastly don't trust a contractor who tells an install will only take them 2 days when all others tell you 3-4. This means they are rushing their work and don't put much quality into their work.

*Rant Off*-on that note any trusted contractors in the Forney-area want to come bid a complete start over job on installing a set of french doors and side lites the right way?

My neighbor had this done and some other remodel work. The GC who did it took around 1.5 weeks, but it does look nice. I will start the texting process for you to determine who he used.

I know personally another guy who is a GC in Van Alstyne that'll rock it, but he charges a premium.

Not a pretty site, but he is good and has done work for a few friends as well. I do not use him anymore though, because I only had piddly jobs and they were expensive from him. Your mileage may vary with a decent job for him as opposed to the minor stuff I needed.

I have a friend of a friend who plays bingo with my mom .......... Sorry could not resist.

Same thing happened to me. I look at the shity job they did on my French doors every

fucking day. They are sagging now and are almost unusable after only 2 years.

There are some people out there that have no business with a contractors license.
