So its a couple pieces of sheet metal that has been bent with a few holes drilled in them? could probably make those much cheaper..

The way I've always understood it, the entire door frame comes down when it's kicked in. A steel door frame is the way to prevent a kick in. There are also extra long reinforced screws and deadbolts that will go farther past the door frame and make it much more difficult for a kick in. I'm sure someone will confirm or correct this.

From what I've seen, the back 1/2 inch of wood on the frame just splinters away at the dead bolt/lock.

Guess it depends. A friend of ours had her door kicked in while she was at home. She screamed, the guy ran away. She said the actual frame kicked in with the door inside it. Come to think of it, I think she might have had something like this product above ... the door didn't kick open, the whole damn frame came in.

A buddy of mine had his kicked in about a year ago. Didn't hurt anything except for the door frame by the lock/deadbolt. He only had to replace the one side.

easy, i did this on my gfs door after it was kicked in, removed the door frame at the deadbolt / lock area, lag screwed 2x4 to house frame, drilled holes for the dead bolt and the door lock reinstalled the metal plates for them and tried kicking it in, about 4 kicks later, i gave up

From the few thousand doors I have seen kicked in that would not work. It is very rare that I see very much damage to the door itself. Usually it splits the frame and that little metal thing will not make much difference. Plus not sure what they are trying to do around the hinges but I guess they do not realize when you kick it at the hinges the screws just tear out. Don't get me wrong it may take them more then one or two kicks but if they are determined that wont stop them. Metal frame and door for the win!

They like to back up and donkey kick doors now. Way less energy is expended this way. We actually tried it once when we went on a medical call.

It´s easy to make your doors almost impossible to kick in. Replace the hinge screws, and striker plate screws with these http://www.lowes.com/pd_323903-1278-...roduct_price|0. I also stuck a screw in the door jamb about every 10¨ all the way around the jamb.
4¨ screw is long enough to engage the wall studs next to the door frame. It was the first thing I ¨fixed¨ when I moved into my house. I went to all of my wifes friends houses and replaced all of theirs also.

That is not a solution for kicking in the door, that's a solution for the problem you have after the door has been kicked in.
