For $3,000 I’d do it myself. I can’t imagine it would take more than a day for the demo of the garage itself. I pulled down (most of) my grandmother’s house by myself, using a Jeep and a chain, in 2 days. If you’ve ever wondered whether a Jeep in 4 wheel low pulling a section of wall is faster than a pissed off swarm of killer bees the answer is yes – just barely. Had to nuke em from orbit after that – just to be sure.

its far enough away from the house, just burn it and stand there keeping the house wet with a hose.

burn it, rent bob cat with jack hammer attachment, rent dumpster for concrete haul off.

Or, chainsaw it into a couple sections, rent bob cat, push over, load into dumpster.

I like fire so I choose to burn stuff.

OP, don't you have any redneck friends? It could be done with a few pickups and some beer. Please be sure to film it.

                Sawzall
                Sledge

                Beer

Fuck if I had the time this trip home I would bring the beer, truck,..... hell all that in the list. Two people could demo and pile it in a dumpster in a few hours.

I wished I was in your position right now. I submitted to the HOA plans for a 12'x20'. It may grow a little but not by much and has to be stick construction on a concrete slab. I will however pay someone to build mine. Demo is one thing, I am just not that great with the 90* angle

When will you be back in next? Oh, and rain tomorrow and Saturday.
Yeah, I think I am going to do the demolition myself and obviously have somebody build the new garage. I will just rent a Bobcat with a jack hammer attachment for concrete and go to town. I will make it worth my time by using the bobcat to tear up the fence in my back yard, a couple of trees I have been wanting to get rid of and maybe..... maybe the concrete around my pool (it is all cracked and I plan on getting a new back porch/patio in the near future). I might a well make good use of the Bobcat rental and dumpster.

I will be home from 11-26 April (2 weeks).

I've done demo/remodels a time or two and each time, I've underestimated the time by alot. Especially if you're looking to save money and do a lot of this by your self.

If it were me, I would figure picking up about 4 guys, extra wheel barrows, hammers and other tools. If it has a concrete slab, then at least 2 jack hammers and having one of the bigger dumpsters on site. And, in case you fill up that dumpster, find out what the turn around time is to have it picked up and brought back. What you might think you'll save in doing it yourself, you'll spend in time/tool rental by extending the length of time it'll take to complete (I hope that makes sense).

Personally, I think that if you're ready to move on the new shop, I'd save the time and just factor the cost of tear down into the project. But again, that's because I've done a few projects with minimal labor (myself and the wife) and it turns out I didn't save much because of the length of time it took to complete. Plus other things that get put on hold because you underestimated the time.

Also, if you plan to make trips to the dump, see what they charge. I know GP allows one free residential pass per month and even then that's only what will fit in the bed of a truck(IIRC).
I agree, I assume it is going to take longer than I initially anticipate, but I will be home on vacation, so I will have more than just a weekend to dedicate to it.

I think the Bobcat with Jack Hammer attachment would make pretty easy work of the foundation.

Does your buddy work in North East Dallas (Sachse, TX)? If so, I am still open to getting reasonable quotes.

Yep, I get home on the 7th and leave the 15th. 7 fucking days from now and I am inches from pulling out my hair down here. This has been a long 120+ stretch for me.

I might throw a GTG at my place on the 13th if you feel like making a trip to Haslet. With a 5 month old, I don't think I will be getting much of a chance to venture too far.

I don't think I have the patience to run a jack hammer. Bobcat? Hell yes, I could drink beer and tear some shit up for sure.

and I need to start working on MRAPs. Truck, trailer and Cobra are nicer than mine. lol
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

13th? I might be able to do that. I am thinking about doing all my demo work during the week and saving my weekends for various GTGs. The problem I normally have when I am home is trying to do everything on the weekends, then I don't have anything to do during the week when everyone is at work. It has almost been a year since I have been home (May 2012).

I sold the Cobra a couple of years ago, but I still have the truck and trailer. My guns and my dirt bike are my only two hobbies right now.

So, I thought you were leaving the slab. 3K sounds like a shit ton, but in theory they'll be in and out with no sign that they've been there. I would investigate dump prices too, they may surprise you on how much they are going to be for you.

To answer your question, it was mostly my Dad who has done the demos. Along with being a builder he runs a dumpster business. However, when he can he'll start a fire and burn all the burnables and take all that ash/metal/leftovers and put THAT in the dumpster. This is in the NE though, a lot less worries about the fire spreading most of the time.

Edit: Keep in mind scrap metal costs though too. If you do it yourself - and you have a bunch in there it may make sense to separate it. I doubt that's the case from what I can see - just something to keep in mind.

Leave the slab. Build the new building at the end of that slab. That would save a little time. You are further back in the property, but at least then you have more driveway.

This what I was thinking, or use it for a covered area leading into the new building. Concrete tear-out is a bitch...and expensive.
