  • Dilapidated detached 1 car garage demolition

I have a 1 car garage that I want to demolish and remove so that I can replace it with a 30x30 steel building garage. I don’t know if this is something I should do myself with a couple friends or if I should pay somebody to do it. Any recommendations? Has anybody done this before?

    Got pics of it?

Generally speaking you tend to end up with a way bigger mess than you'd anticipate. If it's almost falling down already, I'd recommend having someone with heavy equipment at least knock it down - assuming you can't with a tow strap and a truck or something.

Basically, if structure will hold while doing it - should be okay if you're careful. If it's rickety already *I* would just drop it and clean it up from there.

I'm no expert on these things though, just one or two I've done, but heard a lot of stories and mostly iffy to bad on doing rickety buildings.

I don't have any good pictures of it, but here is an aerial shot.

I had a 60x70 building to bring down several years ago, I ended up getting 2 mexicans to do it, had the entire thing down for $200. In hindsight, I should have paid them to load it on the trailer as well.

On the ones you did, did anybody pay to have a dumpster delivered for a couple of days or just make frequent trips to the dump? What about concrete? I know I can rent a jack hammer, just wondering if it turned out harder than what was anticipated. I will be home from Afghanistan for two weeks and looking to maximize my time home, but the last quote I got was $3,000 to demo and removal. I don't mind getting dirty and doing it myself, just just want to make sure I am not underestimating the task.

With it being that small, id just demo it myself and either rent a dumpster or someone to haul it off. Shouldnt take that long to demo, sledgehammer and go to town, dont get under anything, lol.

There is no way I would pay someone to have that fun in my place.
                Truck
                Chain
                Sawzall
                Sledge
                Gloves
                Beer

Fuck if I had the time this trip home I would bring the beer, truck,..... hell all that in the list. Two people could demo and pile it in a dumpster in a few hours.

I wished I was in your position right now. I submitted to the HOA plans for a 12'x20'. It may grow a little but not by much and has to be stick construction on a concrete slab. I will however pay someone to build mine. Demo is one thing, I am just not that great with the 90* angle

When will you be back in next? Oh, and rain tomorrow and Saturday.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

$3k for demo!!!! Do it urself. "Pick up" some help and let them tear it down for you. Put it on a trailer and haul it away to the dump.

IMO, I think that unless you do this for a living, you're underestimating the time. Things are going to come up that will eat your time. I've done demo/remodels a time or two and each time, I've underestimated the time by alot. Especially if you're looking to save money and do a lot of this by your self.

If it were me, I would figure picking up about 4 guys, extra wheel barrows, hammers and other tools. If it has a concrete slab, then at least 2 jack hammers and having one of the bigger dumpsters on site. And, in case you fill up that dumpster, find out what the turn around time is to have it picked up and brought back. What you might think you'll save in doing it yourself, you'll spend in time/tool rental by extending the length of time it'll take to complete (I hope that makes sense).

Personally, I think that if you're ready to move on the new shop, I'd save the time and just factor the cost of tear down into the project. But again, that's because I've done a few projects with minimal labor (myself and the wife) and it turns out I didn't save much because of the length of time it took to complete. Plus other things that get put on hold because you underestimated the time.

Also, if you plan to make trips to the dump, see what they charge. I know GP allows one free residential pass per month and even then that's only what will fit in the bed of a truck(IIRC).

Okay, i revise my statement. Fuck messing with the slab, pay some one to do that.

I'd knock that thing down in 2hrs. Not saying it would be gone, just knocked down.

This sounds like the PERFECT reason to rent a bull dozer.
