Laminate flooring is good option as these are now available in different designs and textures. I recently got the flooring reinstalled and its looks like a marble but is a laminate floor. I got it done from Laminate Floor Installation Chantilly.

We are doing laminate in a large portion of our house. We bought traffic master from Home Depot for .99/sq ft. It is a 7 mm laminate. We are using floor muffler for the under layment. It got good reviews and if you buy online you can get it for half of what you spend at home depot. I can give you a review in about a week after we get it laid.

We chose to go with carpet in the bedrooms for the following reason. We have all hardwoods in our house now, and it SUCKS all of the crap that sticks to your feet and no matter how much you clean your feet before you get in bet, you undoubtedly end up with dirt and pebbles in the bed.

Rugs over the laminate will help with that. We're putting down 6" x 24" porcelain tile that has the texture to look like handscraped hardwood in all bedrooms, and using area rugs for that exact reason. A rug is easier to replace if one of the dogs/kids ruin them.

I have "hand scraped" laminate in my house with vaulted cielings and.cheap pad. No weird sound and the look is good enough that only a small handful though it wasnt wood. From it's durability with our 90lb lab vs wood floors, I will never go hardwood.
