  • Panel Fence Building Advice

Looking into replacing the panel fence around the yard as the current fence has had it. Had a few quote done and dont wanna pay the quoted prices. Looked at Home Depot at 6x8 board on board panels and the other needed fence parts. Anyone know of a good place to buy the 6x8 panels cheaper? Also any advise on this adventure?

Dont buy the shitty pre-built panels, they will not last. They are nearly the same price per lft as if you built it, difference is yours will last 10+ years lucky to get 5 out of the pre-built.

that, plus put in metal posts with a cap on the top.

Panels are made to keep the cost down. To keep the cost down, quality is sacrificed. When quality goes, so does the life expectancy.

Using the panels will be fine, just use metal poles and stain the panels before installing them, they should last a while. The biggest thing is to stain them. That helps protect from the weather and makes them last.

Why do people always skip this step? I don't understand why you wouldn't stain a fence. You already paid for all the material. Add a little more and protect it.

I would choose to use screw instead of nail. That way the pickets can't pop loose from the 3x4.

You can use ring shank nails and it will still hold up.

i guess if you stain the fence, it wont dry and the pickets wont curl. then you wont need the screws

I use to buy panels at Diamond Fence in Fort Worth on Vesta Farley Rd when I used to do side jobs. They had 3 different grades of panels all better quality than the box stores and cheaper. You usually had to call and they would make them on demand.

If i remember correctly, lowes and home depot can order cedar panels.

Do it yourself, use metal posts and screws. That shit will last.

I built a fence in '95 at my rent house. 8' tall, treated post, 2x4 treated runners, and 1/2" treated pickets. It is still up and strong. I have been with my wife 13 years. My father in law insists on using Depot panels. he has done his fence twice since we have been together.

Problem with panels is the shitty quality of materials used.
They use shitty runners that is typically the week point, build it with 2x4s. The pickets used on the pre built are thin as hell. If it is a fencing company pre building to order it is prob fine. The ones from Lowes or Depot SUCK!

And ring shank nails are more than fine.
