  • Weed and Feed

Is now a good time to throw it down, or do i need to wait a few more weeks?

Just got into this house and trying to decide what to do. Either throw some weed and feed down, or pay a company to treat it for the first year to get it cleared up. The yard is about 50/50 in weeds and bermuda.

Thoughts? What worked for you guys?

My opinion is weed and feed has little effect on a yard covered in weeds. Being as you have no grass yet you will primarily be feeding the weeds with the fertilizer part. This has been my experience in the past anyways.

The weed killer in the bottle that you hook up to a hose and water the yard with has worked well to kill the weeds or if you want to do it a little more concentrated use a sprayer and mix it yourself.

So am i better off throwing some Bermuda seed down when it warms up and hope it chokes out the weeds? The grass is getting pretty thin in some areas.

Image is the one I've used from a bottled hooked up to a hose and it works well as a weedkiller for bermuda lawms. I don't use weed and feed much at all because our trees get affected by it.

first off, what kind of weeds? Broadleaf or grassy weeds?

If it's broadleaf, those will die off pretty easy with a broadleaf weed killer. The grassy weeds, which is what I've been seeing now, is harder to get rid of.

IMO, if the weeds are already established and thriving, I doubt throwing down seed will choke the weeds out....usually the other way around since you'll need to water and fertilize the seed and the weeds benefiting from that same water and fertilizer.

If it were me and I had grassy weeds, I'd just poision the heavily weeded areas, if not the whole damn yard. That should slow down the weed growth and not harm the dormant grass. I haven't seem any good yards greening up yet so I would think it's still dormant. Then in about 5-6 weeks, throw out your seed and fertilizer.

It's mostly broadleaf growing. I guess I will go with a bottle sprayer then.. Everything that is green is weeds for the most part in my yard.

I did the weed and feed thing on mine a while back. I clearly over estimated the amount of grass I had. Then I just randomly dumped a 50 pounds of Kentucky 51 in the back acre. It actually came up fairly well for no soil prep or anything.

I've had really good luck with the ortho weed b gone in a spray bottle. it hooks to the end of a water hose. At first I treated it twice with a 30 day spread then came back with a regular scotts weed n feed. And just watered the rest of the year. The next year i used the same weed n feed then about 60 days later i put down scotts max green. the whole time i would water twice a week for about 20 mins a section. Last year my yard was pretty nice.

This was the middle of the summer last year.

Do you have ANY grass (bermuda or St Augustine ) or is it all weeds.

It's 50/5i would say. Some good Bermuda spots and them some big broadleaf weed spots.
