  • Remodel upstairs bathroom, how to seal?

We are diving into our house remodel early this year. Upstairs is all done but carpet and the bathroom.

So we start in the bathroom. We are tilling the shower surround and halfway up the walls. Since we are upstairs, we will obviously be using cement board for all the walls around the tub, but what do we use beneath the tile floor itself for sealant? Cement board is too thick i though. I know the tile will make a good seal also, just want it to be done right the first time so no leaks will occur from upstairs.

We will be using the peel and stick backing to install the tile then stick the tile and grout over that.

Suggestions on what to do under the floor would be greatly appreciated.

Do more research... you need a better seal for the shower than just cement board. Hydroban, Kerdi, Redguard, or something over the cement board to waterproof it. If there is a tub, hang the cement board over the lip of the tub and seal it with Kerdi fix or silicone.

Check out the john bridge forums. Its a huge forum dedicated to tile work.

For the floors, just hardibacker or cement board over the subfloor is fine.

Go to the John Bridge forum and spend a few hours reading. There are many different ways to do what you are about to do. And forget about using mastic anywhere near a shower. Maybe for a backsplash that isn't around or near water, but mastic shouldn't ever be used in wet areas. Use a quality dry thinset or whatever is recommended with the other products you decide to go with.
