  • Plumbing question

So i found I have a leak at the meter near the street. The hole with the meter was full of water. I called the city and they came out and replaced the meter and said the leak is actually coming from my side but they replaced to be safe.

Here is my question, the meter isn't spinning. So how can I have a leak if the meter isn't registering that water is running?

It would have to be coming from the city side if the meter is off and water is still flowing, unless your line is back flowing...which I don't know if that could even happen.

It's not free. The meter spins when water is running in the house. When everything is turned off, it doesn't.

As far as backflow goes, I don't smell anything. The water looks clean in the meter hole as well.

If your meter is off go turn on your sink to clear your lines, if water is still filling the hole it's on the city side. Right?

Well i could do that I suppose. Maybe do that over night. Its a pretty small leak I think.

That'd be your call on doing it overnight, I know my wife would shit a brick it we had to leave the water off...you could have a plumber come out or just dig a few feet back from the meter depending how deep it is. If its wet you have a leak, if its dry they have a leak.

The meter is between the sidewalk and the street. There is no water in the yard. It could be under the sidewalk.

I say overnight because it seems like it would take a while to fill that hole.

Try it and see what happens.

So the meter guy changed it out about 10 am this morning. I checked the hole around 3 o'clock and it had water in it. Came home tonight and it has the same amount of water or less. I think the meter guy is full of shit.
