  • I guess I will have to start a shower remodel thread

I had been finding little black ants in the shower. Tapped the drywall between the tub and it was soft. I cut it out and the only thing holding it together wad the layers of paint. The studs are rotted 2' up and completely toasted at the floor. Meanwhile thd ants keep pouring in.

To make it worse I have to leave in the morning for 4 months in Afghanistan.

Be fun getting home warranty to cover that (if you had one since it was custom home).

No home warranty. House was built in 1999 and we purchased in 2009. At the time we got a home warranty but let it expire when they rigged the a/c to get us by instead of fixing it properly back in 2010.

I called my insurance and since it is not a result of sudden damage vs long term it will be denied.

I wanted to remodel the shower any way, now I just have a better reason. Sucks that I can't do it myself nor will I be here to oversee the work. Ugh.

You wont be here so it will be hard to get insurance to cover it, but water damage is covered by your insurance co. The part that failed is not covered, but the damage is.

Looks like the root cause was shit craftsmanship. What asshole uses standard sheet rock with tile layed directly over it for the threshold or anywhere else in a constant wet area for that matter? An asshole that is who. Then to just keep stuffing caulk in the seam just delayed where we are today.

I was able to gut the obvious infected area out before I left. Now to find a contractor.

Looking down at the threshold with the "cap" tiles pushed out.

I cleaned it up down to the liner and sprinkled some ant killer for good measure. Also put a heater on the whole area to help with the moisture.

That sucks, but at least you guys have good taste in the remodeling department - I'm sure it will be nice.

That sux. It does seem like many builders and contractors shortcut the hell out of showers, knowing the house will be out of warranty when the owners find it.

Damn man. Didn't know it was that bad.

I might be abet to hook you up with my brother Keith, especially if you do a remodel, but even if it's a quick fix for now.

Let me know if you want me to call him (actually just had dinner with him at Los Molcajetes).

Keith does excellent work. He did the shop behind my house.

                            Thanks Scott.

Miss hanging in that shop... wheeling big blocks on a harbor freight dolly back there to build. Good times man.

Thanks David. Yes, let's see if we can set him up to come over and take a look at what we need. I am looking at stripping the shower down to the studs and pan. Depending on the cost for the shower I would like to retile the master bath floor and tile more of the wall surrounding the tub. Not quite a remodel.

                              Call you later.
