  • Garage floor coatings

I'm thinking about painting my garage floor with one of those kits I see on tv. Does anyone have any experience with garage floor paint stuff? Just curious if the stuff holds up well or if it will just peel off in a few yrs

From what i found out after i did my garage floor, so long as you clean the floor extremely well, use acid to etch the concrete and use a two part epoxy system rather then those cheap ones sold at the home improvement stores, you will be fine. I use the rustolieum kits at lowes, did exactly as the instructions said even used all their cleaning products, let it cure for 10 days, the first time i parked on it the tires left brown marks and any time they were hot from driving, it would peel up the coating... in short, stay away from the cheap kits and go with a quality kit. U-coat it is a very nice kit but pricy. the only way to start over is to have someone come in with a diamond grinder and grind it all off..

    hope this helps!

Thank you for the heads up. I was just telling myself I needed to go down to home depot and see what they had. I will avoid their stuff now.

The stuff from Sherwin Williams works good but is expensive. I used it on the floor in my bar and it held up to high traffic.

From what I have been reading on the garagejournal.com epoxy coat is the best. You also have to etch or grind the concrete. And last apply a clear coat.

Yeah I'm starting to think it will be a pain in the ass. Now I'm thinking I will just clean the concrete good and try to keep it clean instead of painting it

I just used a large floor sander from united rentals to clean/prep the concrete. It worked well, I didn't want to mess with the acid stuff.

I used the rustoleum kit and havent had any problems with it. Its been down for about 6 months now and no peel up. Cleans easy and dirt and oil wipes away. Though I havent been on it too many times with tires at temp, prob a handful of times since its been down, and I also try not to turn the wheels when hot either. It had heard mixed reviews about it, but used several gift cards to get it so it really didnt cost me much. If youve got the money, the U Coat it stuff is nice.

nice! yours has more of a gloss finish then mine. I put 4 coats of the clear coat also.. took me 3 weeks from start to finish allowing each coat to dry, then 10 days to cure.. maybe if i used the acid wash it might have been better. I used the same brand cleaner.

But that's not hot tires on it... not even close to the same.

Yeah, I'd say it's a lot fucking worse.

The good stuff is Neogard. It's what they use in big sports stadiums and airport hangers.

Stonhard hands down. You can drop an engine block on it and it stays.
