I just found my terminix paperwork and it is good until the 31st of this month, so I'm calling them out to come investigate. According to the contract they are liable for any termites and/or any damage caused by termites within the contract period.
Probably termites. Even without evidence around the outside of the house, they can come around plumbing and drains. The good news is that they are probably pretty contained. I'm thinking the rain riled them up. Could possibly be carpenter ants, too, if that's something other than mud on the floor.

I popped a couple of the more lose tiles on the lower facing of the shower wall that are close in proximity to those that I took the picture of. I don't see anything(termites) per say, but I'll try to pull some more tiles off later when I have time. I don't really want to start ripping out all the tiles if it's not necessary, but if that's what I have to do then so be it.

You can all go to hell, lol, no I'm just kidding.
It's Termite City under the shower. Good news is that they are treating it for free. The only bad part was when I brought up the fact that the certificate clearly states I am covered for any damage that the termites have cause during the contract period, and after I said that there was this awkward moment of silence and he was like uh yeah you'll need to take that up with customer service. Oh the joys of home ownership.
There should be nothing "under the shower" except where they came in. It's concrete and a shower pan (unless your house is pier and beam, of course). There IS lumber inside the shower walls, and I'm thinking that is where any damage would be. You see the issue here: tear out shower walls to see IF there's damage. OR get rid of termites and see IF there's damage that turns up at a later date and deal with it then.
