    They take a core sample of the soil, then you can submit it to the engineer who will figure out what the slab needs to be stable. Sometimes they require piers, wider beams, more cables or steel, etc.

      Yep, they have two take two samples, and it(at least for my parents) take 2 weeks to process.

      I can't remember the cost. I want to say it was a grand or so. Could be way off on that.

      The builder is working with my parents/I and helping us do some of the work so he doesn't charge us his 10% fee.
