  • Bathroom remodel...

I didn't want to threadjack FordRacking19's thread about his new house build, so I opened this thread in response to Vertnut's comments...

I wish the builder of my current home (which I just sold) had done that. These fuckers, Sumeer, couldn't properly build a matchstick house...

I ended up gutting the entire master bath down to the studs. Just note folks, a tile wall is not water proof if it isn't done properly.

Stripping it down to the studs was the only realistic option. Gotta love that huge ass hole around the drain. I know you're supposed to give future plumbers easy access but again, WTF? I filled the hole with gravel then put a 2 inch layer of concrete over that. I also put some foam around the drain pipe itself so it wouldn't be encased in the concrete. It'll be fairly easy to bust the concrete out if needed.

I replaced all that greenboard with Hardi board. Even then I put a coat of redguard over it to project it from water. Then I went old school with the base. I properly sloped mortar bed. The 2x4s formed the base of the curb..

Then the old school vinyl liner which was followed by the final layer of mortar.

I even put a coat of red guard over the hardi board before tiling.

    The finished bathroom..

The finished shower. I had Dallas Glass and Mirror do the glass surround. It was the only part of this project that was done by a pro. They did a damn good job too. Cost me about $1200. The entire project cost me about $3000.

FYI your remodel inspired me to do ours a couple of years ago. I'm about to tackle the kitchen back splash in out new hose next month and we'll be re-doing the master bath shower in a couple of years. I watched it get built and even with them "fixing" things it was like a monkey fucking a football watching them do tile work. Big ups to http://www.johnbridge.com/vbulletin/index.php

Everything you ever wanted to read about tile. We'll be using Spectralock again and probably going with GP DensShield.

The fun thing is, I get to do the whole thing all over again in the new house. But now I've got THREE full baths I can redo.

The Master is going to get the bathtub ripped out. I'm putting in a supersized shower with multiple shower heads and perhaps a steam shower. I'll probably be knocking down a wall so I can enlarge the bathroom itself...

Looks really nice! Don't feel too bad about Sumeer, because they're just one of several that don't do things properly. They're smart enough to know that by the time you notice an issue, the warranty has expired. So much of home building/remodeling is just common sense, and sometimes it means spending a few extra bucks to do it right.

About to do the same thing with our master. Just ripping out the tub and making a large "porno" shower.

Holy shit we were just looking at Sumeer in Hachie. Glad we decided on the much cheaper project house sorta.

Man, I am afraid that first pic is what my master shower would look like if I tore it out.

Your photos and the progression of your shower especially look like what I just went through...

Bought a foreclosure in Keller, they had installed some sissy bench in the left side of the shower...and it leaked...like crazy. So ripped it all out and black mold was even on the studs.

The good news is, the "old school" (I prefer it actually) install and ripping out the sissy bench gave me an extra wide shower.

Eventually I am going to post up my house rebuild. Amazing was 90 days in a house will turn it into.

Wow - looks great. We did similar design at old house. Did both bath rooms walls in large 16" stone type tile and put a simple deco strip of double 1" square strip of accent stone and looked perfect and gave oit a modern flare.

On a nother note, shouldnt you have started at the bottom on this wall?

The only downside to starting on the bottom of the wall in an area like that is not having a full tile at the visible part of the top of the 1/2 wall. I think starting at the top leaving the cut tile at the floor is a better idea.

We actually started tiling at one row above the one my wife is working on in this picture. I put a ledger board there to support the weight of the first few tiles to insure they didn't slip. I then pulled the board, sealed the holes and went up from there... There are other ways to do it but I felt getting that first row supported correctly was the best way.. This only left about 3 rows of tiles to be supported at the bottom. It worked out pretty well...

Yes, absolutley right. I just finished our backsplash earlier this year. Start on the ends and leave the cuts in the corners. Is that tumbled marble?
