  • Bodark/Osage Orange/Horseapple tree removal

Well, I went out to the property today to trim some trees and realizing how many of these damn trees need to come out. Started cutting and on my 3rd or so 8" limb, the chainsaw gummed up from the tree sap and stopped running.

Anyone have any suggestions? Im using a Stihl Chainsaw with a 24" bar. I have a ton to go. I might end up having to pay, but that is going to be VERY expensive. I have a 40' tall bodark that needs to come down (half the tree is dead which causes its own problems). I just figure Im willing to put in the work and the $1000's its going to cost would buy some nice chainsaws and dozens of chains.

When we have the pond dug, I can probably have them bulldoze a lot of the smaller trees but they will still need to be cut up and/or chipped.

they are extreamely hard, on of the hardest woods. We had to take out several when I was in highschool at the house we bought and rehabed.

We had to keep several blades on hand, it will dull them down quickly. They will actually shoot sparks as you are cutting. They just suck, and the sap is crazy in parts.

I battled those things when we had land. If you can find a company that makes bows (recurves) they may come take the trees since they love that wood.

The root structures are massive and even if you cut down the tree the roots will survive and bushes will start to grow that are filled with 2-3" thorns. It isn't just a matter of cutting them down and being done with it.

You'd need an endless supply of chains and fuel if you're cutting down bodark tree's. Tough SOB's.

I'm a forester, I'm not French either and we don't have no google out here in the woods.

They are a pain (literally) to survey a line through.

Yeah, we always commonly called them osage orange. I never heard the the other two names used outside of Texas.

No shit lol, I've cut a lot of line through it, and end up with scratched arms. Neat to see a brushhook throw sparks when you hit the wood.
