  • Stone columns and wrought iron fence

I am about to pull the trigger on our fence project. In our development the HOA only allows wrought iron. I plan to have 6-8 decorative stone columns installed, one at each corner of the yard and some mid way in between.

Our house sits on a large acre lot and it's far from level. The long sides will be over 200ft long and there may be as much as one foot or more variation in grade. For this reason we have some differences of opinion and hoping someone here that knows can advise.

The columns will be 6ft tall, and 2ft x 2ft square. The footings will be slightly larger in area but will be at least 2ft deep. When building these footings on a grade, shouldnt the footing height be determined by the highest point? I would think you would want to string these with a level line, right?

To disregard this would have the fence following the grade of the lot. This might mean more concrete for the lower lying footings and possibly bringing in fill dirt to fill in around the lowest areas. Any advice here?

Here's an example of the type structure I am referring to

Will PM him. On another note, we are running into sprinkler system supply lines and valve controller wires. Can you just pour concrete in around those? I know I can cut and splice in the PVC and go aorund the footing but I didnt think you could splice those valve wires as the wiring is direct contact earth grade and a nick or cut in the wire will eventually break open. Anyone know on this? We arent pouring concrete yet and I have a call in to Junior now.
