actually they're a great mower when properly maintained. That being said.... Forbes hit the nail on the head when it comes to maintaining them.

I started using a Scotts 16" reel mower this season. My lawn looks 10x better than it did before using the gasoline mower. Lawn has recieved several compliments for its' "golf course" look too

Husqvarna makes one with self sharpening blades, I bought it and tried it out for a month, then returned it. It cut great, but if your yard is not extremely level it is a pain, even worse if you have any weeds. Some it would cut, some it would halfway cut and others it would just push over.

self sharpening and no seasonal sharpening, two completely different things, i was just curious as to how they were supposedly going about the self sharpening

I think they have self propelled versions of this don't they? They cut more like a pair of scissors and manicure the grass rather than hacking it with a blade and stresses the grass less.

well I sharpen my blade after every run, its as sharp as a razor so Im not sure there's much stress there.

yes, it is actually just like a pair of scissors, the reel mates up to the bedknife just like a pair of scissors, i only sharpen the greens mower reels about once a month, this is just a greens mower used to mow my tee boxes and fairways

I have been using one for 5 years and I like how quiet it is. I think I have sharpened it once since I have owned it. I recently got a small gas mower for when the leaves hit the ground in fall and during major weed season. If your yard is well taken care of and pretty level they are fine. However as said above you have to really work at it if you have anything that pops up over four inches or so. I usually just do a half twist on top of the weed with the mower and it gets it. The key is, when you twist it, it keeps the blades spinning while kinda hovering over the weed and usually gets it. My yard is pretty small so it is no big deal to me to have to go over it twice in some spots in different directions.

Do these work well on crab grass and weeds? I am still working to get my yard into shape as it was a complete mess when I moved in. My yard is really level, but does not have a good grass cover yet
