Here is what it looks like today. Weed and Feed was applied on Thursday evening. No water until it rained this weekend. Not sure if you can see much of a difference, a lot of the weeds with thinner stalks have yellowed and look to have died off, some of the heartier weeds are still thriving, I'm going to try and get them all pulled up tomorrow. Recommendations on what to do from here? Stick with the water and follow up with max green in 3 weeks?

There is some in there, though it isnt much and it definitely isnt thick in any spot. Will St augustine survive under the trees?

It gets sun from about 45 min after sun up, until ~noon, and then from 3-4 to about 6 as the sun passes the canopy of the trees

Honestly this late in the year it's going to be tough to get much grass to grow for very ling. You really need to give the seed time to get the roots deep enough to hold some moisutre during the heat of the summer in order to be able to survive. If I remember correctly, late Fall and early Spring are the best times to seed/overseed.

hmm, only if you are overseeding with rye/fescue, otherwise its best to wait till may ish to seed, when bermuda is actively growing with night temps consistantly in the upper 60's to low 70's minimum.......however, you cant seed st augustine so really no point in this discussion.

well, I spent all day cleaning out the dead shit and weeds in the front yard. I think I got most of them and wrecked my back in the process. I looked around to see if anyone had any sod and couldn't find any, was going to get a price and see what it was going to cost me to get it done. This is a rent house, and at this point I'm not 100% sure the realtor will reimburse me for my expenses. So, with that in mind, I pulled what may prove to be a bonehead move. I picked up some bermuda seed and some starter fertilizer. As small as the area is, I'm only out $20 bucks. I got to watching the light in this patch as the sun rotated through the sky and realized that it probably wasn't going to be enough for st augustine to thrive.

fyi, if st. aug wouldnt survive, then bermuda wont stand a chance in hell
with that said, go ahead and pick up some "shade" grass seed they sell, i dont know the name but it will work for you if you keep it watered and really dont have any "afternoon" sun getting thru

Well shit, I guess thats what I get for not doing enough research. I thought bermuda was a lower light grass.

The first set of pictures were taken later in the afternoon. The second set were taken around 1-2PM if that gives you an idea of how much sun it gets

Im recycling this one since we are going green here and all.

DO NOT apply weed and feed with atrazine (which is the active ingredient in many weed and feeds) around your trees, unless you dont want them anymore
I spread the Scotts TurfBuilder with 2% weed control a little over a week ago and I think I have killed one of my new live oaks. It's the yellow bag, doesn't claim any Atrizine contents and is recommended for bermuda yards. I called Scotts as there is nothing on the bag about harmful to trees or stay out of the drip line. They recommended deep watering for 30 mins, every two days in the sense of diluting the herbicide. I did that and the tree looked noticeably workse the next day. This is a 45 gallon tree and I think it just washed the product deeper only to be absorbed by the deeper root system. WTF can I do??

Zemog I lost your number. Can you PM me? Was hoping you arborist might have some ideas. This tree is fairly large with nearly 5 cal inch trunk and was planted in OCT/11.

Bermuda will thrive in full sun conditions and also does well with high traffic use (think golf course). Deep soak the grass once a week and 2x thereafter. You want to always have, starting from the surface, 4-6" of moisture. You can adjust how you water your grass and it will in turn adapt to conditions, especially for droughts. Coated urea is a slow relee fertilizer, non coated urea is a quick release and will need to be re-applied more often. Never cut off more than 1/3 of the grass length at once. If you use a push reel mower, your grass will llook better. The shorter it is kept, the stronger the roots will grow, (horizontaly, not downwards) and your grass will fill in. Not bagging the small grass clippings and allowing them toi stay will add more nitrogen back to your yard to promote growth and color. Aerating will help if your yard is very compact and is having trouble absorbing water and fertilizer.

Hope some of this info helps, good luck with the grass!
