I would rather have a bid in hand from someone I trust so I first have an idea of what the total cost is going to be. Then have the adjuster come out, see what they'll pay, then compare the numbers.

You just validated a lot of what I said Brent. They're after the money. The titanium UDL is a great product, but doesn't really do anything that felt doesn't. The underlying material is a secondary means of preventing water penetration. The shingles are first. The only time that matters is if shingles go away. At that point, felt paper has a tighter seal to the nail than the plastic that is titanium UDL. Pretty stuff, same difference.

Upgrades are always cheap. Standard ridge cap runs a little over a buck a foot, Z-Ridge sells for about three bucks a foot, so you're looking at about $400 or so difference on the average house. Pretty cheap. The only "expensive' upgrade is the vented ridge cap, which I don't really recommend as they trim your decking back about three inches on each side of the ridge. Once the shingles get a little age on them they are apt to be ripped off by high winds, leaving a six inch wide gap at the peak of your roof.

As Steve just said, do NOT use the door to door guys. You are nothing but another door to be knocked for them and they do NOT care about making it right. Many are actually out of state that swoop in and get local numbers and the like to appear as local.

At the end of the day it's more of a sales tool than anything. Shingle manufacturers have recently raised the bar in terms of shingles and the winds that they are now able to resist. Previously shingles would begin to separate from one another at approximately 70mph, now that has been raised to approximately 120mph with most 30 year dimensional shingles. This means that in order for todays class of shingle to come loose you would be involved in an EF2 tornado, at which point you have bigger concerns...

So basically a 3 tab roof will not stand up to a EF0, seeing as they are only rated at 60 mph, and a 30 year, is rated 120-150 so that means EF2. I would think if you got any higher wind speeds then that, it would start sucking decking off. I noticed you said you did not like tamko. That is what is on my rent house. I had owens corning before, and had blow offs, because they did not seal properly. With this tamko roof, we have had 80 mph wind gusts and they have not moved. I noticed some shingles called Pabko I think that is what its called, anyways are those any good?

I never intended to actually let these guys do any work, it just sort of got the ball rolling to get some answers to questions I had about the process. I knew this thread would probably bring responses from Mike, Dan, and others that would not only help me but others who may have the same questions. If I do anything it will be through a board member or other local independent business owner. C'mon Steve, I may be an asshole, but I'm not stupid.
