His quote was very competitive, and if it wasn't for my brother in law getting into roofing at that time and needing work we would have used him.

Just curious mike, I noticed earlier in the thread you didn't like Atlas shingles. The one you listed that you DID install I have no issues with, but anything specific about Atlas you don't like?

Also, for homeowners who dont really have a clue about this stuff, what should I look for in determining when to replace my roof? I figure I have at least another 5 years before I need to get mine done, but I want to at least learn a little.

You should fully expect him to trespass on your property after he completes the work. Also if you build fences he will undercut your pricing.
