  • Backyard makeover

I'm getting the itch to do some work on my backyard.

My biggest gripe is that its lumpy/uneven and the previous owners had an above ground pool toward the back of the yard which sunk that whole area down about 4-5" from the rest of the yard.

I know i'm going to be needing a good amount of fill dirt for that area and a massive hole the dogs dug getting at an old rotting tree stump. Its also got 2 in ground sprinkler zones installed. No idea how deep.

I am not happy at all with the grass (gets full sun now, at least 8 hrs) but with a future deck and some trees i want to plant, i'm thinking i should nuke the existing grass and resod with another variety. Any recommendations, ideas on cost?

With the dogs i dont want to roundup the yard with a poison. Or leave it as a dirt /mud field. Tilling the existing grass into the earth just sounds like i'm going o have future problems of it growing back, so whats my best option to get the grass out when its already unlevel ground?

I'm thinking my order is to
shave the grass off and mark sprinkler heads (how?)
The fill dirt to level and tamp down
Lay 4ft sod rolls as i want and pavers for a path (cost, species?)
Adjust sprinklers to new lawn height

    Bout right?

Okay, see if I was keeping up - based off your summary.

Understand, I'm just a homeowner who has done like you and winged it.

    1. We usually adjust sprinklers if at all possible before getting crazy. We do it out of fear of them getting buried, or a project taking too long...and still getting buried.

    2. Without pictures, it's difficult for me to advise on leveling.

    3. The grass thing we're sort of going through now, and we're tilling it up in certain areas and reseeding. You could re-sod.

    4. However, if it was a pool that compacted it, tilling it maybe all ya need. Unless for some reason it eroded. Should be sand there too for an above ground pool...not that it applies, just curious.

Are you under any watering restrictions right now?
