  • Garage Door Springs

    I generally get a PM every two weeks or so from forum members asking about garage door repairs.

    Do NOT try to fix your own springs unless you have winding bars. I believe that you have the ability to repace them but without the proper tools you can get hurt badly.

    Ive replaced many forum users springs, repaired doors, replaced doors, operators etc. I generally do this on my spare time and after 7pm. Depending how far away you are from me.

    Dont fall for gimmics, like you see on roadside ads stating a 60 "tuneup" on your garage door.

    Most springs are rated for 10,000 cycles. They last for 8-10 years.

    Unlike what you would think ONE SPRING is better than two springs. Cause if one breaks, your replacing both. A single spring is made of a thicker gauge wire, than a double spring. I seen single springs last about 20% longer.

    IF YOU HAVE A SPRING BREAK ON YOU, do not operate the door. You can damage the operator. Throw cables, damage the door, etc. Also dont think you can lift the door on your own, unless you can bench about 300 pounds.

    Any way if you have questions on garage door stuff feel free to send me a PM.

    That snug fit of the winding bars beats using screw drivers any day!

        Our screw type died this morning. Luckily we were parked outside already. Now time for a new opener.

                I tried rewinding the spring on the rear folding door on my race car trailer. It was pretty damn stout and nothing compared to a house's door/ spring visually. I knew that day I would not try it.
                Some cars and a bike...

                Some say... they have been raced, some a lot

                  Man I just got back from HD with a brand new 1hp screw type. This old was 12-13 years old so I would say we got out life out of it. Besides the last couple days it was sounding a little sick.

                  Thanks though

                    Just got online, Sent you a Txt.

                    Don't install the new garage door opener, yet.

                    If you have a Genie Garage Door opener on your garage now, its a $10.00 fix, if what you told me in a PM is correct.

                      So what's a good opener for a 12x12 shop door?

                        Jackshaft operator - Commercial grade

                        I'd personally just use a chain lift

                          Damn Genie will not program remotes. Set the limits then go to the remotes and the limits are not there.

                            Make sure your light sensors are hooked up correctly.

                            If you have two separate garage doors, make sure they are

                            Door 1 Door 2

                            G R R G

                            G=Green
                            R=Red

                            Also, you need to press the program button on the operator, it should start flashing, then press your new remotes button.

                            Not sure what the issue you are having.
