  • Sears/Chamberlain garage door opener repair

So, after a tad over 8 years the chain sprocket on my garage door opener sheared completely off.

Instead of buying a new one, I ordered a kit off of Amazon. It was shipped for under $26. Sears Parts Direct at 5001 N. Beach wanted almost $38 plus tax.

So, I ordered it off of Amazon and got it in about 3 days.

There is a great Youtube video that shows the step-by-step procedure for replacing the gears.

The only problem I had was the bushing that came with the kit that goes into the top plate was a tad too small, so I had to re-use the old bushing.

The video calls it a main bearing and it's at 2:37 in the video.

So, if anyone has the nylon gears wear out, or has the sprocket shear off, this is a pretty easy fix.

may also want to check your springs on the door...My opener broke when my springs got weak, and it put too much strain on the gears of the opener..

Disengage the opener and raise the door about half-way up manually and let it go...It should stay put! if it falls then you need the springs tightened

This. I had an old Craftsman style like that in Houston and it went nearly 20 years before the gear ate itself. Definitely check to see that the door is balanced.

Good info, I replaced a Chamberlain a few years back due to this.

FWIW, that same one I bought (purchased at Home Depot) developed some other issue I was not able to diagnose. I pulled it down and Leah took it up to Home Depot and they replaced it with no questions asked..

They are pretty good about that.

The cheap ass builders put one spring on the door and it lasted about 6 years.

I was in the garage when it let loose. It sounded like a gun shot! I thought some homie had tried to do a drive by.

A guy in Arlington came out and replaced it with the dual spring system. It works VERY well now.
