Water heater leak

My stupid water heater drips out of the hose hook up. I bought a cap and the damm threads on the plastic spout cross threaded. Now the cap I bought wont go on. Anyone got any McGuyver ideas that will stop this thing from dripping?

drain the tank, replace drain nipple with brass or copper.
