I replaced my first door and casing a few months ago. Its pretty easy but the biggest things I learned were the most important part is making sure the ground is level. I thought mine was level and the sides are perfectly level but the gap along the top isnt perfect now because the floor wasnt perfect. Also had to sand on the casing to get the door to close right. Also I used all screws and was having hell with the shims splitting.

Its not hard though, just make sure everything is plum and level before you start sinking nails/screws and your good.

I was just thinking, why can't I just screw this door onto it's current frame? There's nothing wrong with it. The house is only 5 years old

Because not all doors are the same size with hinge locations in the same place and have striker plates in the same spot.

We got lucky on a buddies door we replaced. We measured and the new door matched up pretty close to the old one. We still had to put a strip in along the top in between the old casing and new door because the new door was about 1/4" too short but everything else lined up.

where you at? shouldn't take more than hour... make sure you have everything
shims, foam, new interior exterior trim, caulk, paint, threshold etc...
the trick is squaring the frame lay it down and cut a 1x4 to hold the frame square. then stick and stab it in the hole. be sure to using opposing sides when you shim.. if you get in a super bad bind and you aint to far away i'll come fill the hole for ya.
