  • Toro push mower owners....

Just got a deal on a lightly used Toro Recycler self propelled 22" mower with a 6.75hp Briggs at a local pawn shop. Starts up beautifully, mows awsome and has one of the smoothes self propelled systems I have ever tried.

Only problem is when I engage the blades the thing sounds like it has a horrible rod knock. Disengage the blades and it sounds normal. Is this normal for these things?

I did a full tune up, oil change and sharpened and balanced the blades. I have a 30 day warranty so no biggie if its screwed up but they didnt have any other nice mowers up there and I bet it will be in store credit.

I have the same mower and mine doesn't sound like that. I did buy a Snapper years ago at a pawn shop and it rattled until it sent the rod right thru the side of the block. I would take it back.

I've had one for about 10 years. I service it regularly and it has always sounded like it had a rod knock. I bought it new.

Take it to a toro dealer and see what they say. Listen to one there. Mine is a smaller B&S engine.

Thanks guys, I found someone selling one with the same 190cc B&S motor here locally so Im going to go check it out if they are open and see what it sounds like. I also figured out I overpaid after seeing what people are charging on craigslist. Owell, if the one at the shop doesnt knock then I may get it and take the one I have back. It starts and mows awsome and doesnt show alot of wear, just sounds like it is going to throw a rod.

Put some Mower Oil in it. I use Toro Mowers & these are great mowers. Just need to keep oil in them.

Thanks Seb, I just saw your post. First thing I did was go to Home Depot and buy a briggs and stratton tune up kit and chaged the oil, filter and plug and put the gas stabalizer in my gas can. Like I said, the noise is only when I put the mower under a load like engaging the blades. At idle, it sounds perfectly normal.

And yes, the main reason I paid so much for it was the name, I heard Toro is real good.

Same reason I ended up with a Toro, my parents still have the same Toro I used when I was a kid and it works great 15+ years old. So I get a house and go to home depot and get what I thought was a decent Toro, around $400. It's not bad, but it sucks compared to my parents, come to find out my parents have a commercial version Toro that's like $1200 now days.

So I'm stuck with my cheap mower because there isn't a chance in hell I'm spending that much on one lol. Maybe someday when I have kids and nothing better to do in life than mow the yard to get away from them I'll drop the coin.

I've got a Toro mower, weed eater, and blower. Never had a problem with any of them. The mower is about 6 yrs old and the weed eater is about 5 yrs old. I've never had a knock in the mower though.

I bought a Toro brand new back in April, and I too, thought it was the best mower I ever had! I bought it for the same reasons stated in here already, and my Toro weedeater is still working great after 7 years of use/abuse.

Fast forward to Saturday, this thing quits half-way through mowing the yard! I end up taking it back to the Home-Depot and have to go through a few employees, all the way up to a manager to see about an exchange since its been more than 30 days since purchase. He tells me there's a recall on these things, somthing about the transmission for the blade release feature that will let go and sieze the engine!

He took mine back, and gave me store credit. I bought a Honda mower.

OP, you might want to look into the recall if you can't figure out what the noise is.

Thanks for the heads up!! That may be the same issue mine is having or getting ready to have anyway.
