  • treated wood + heat = a really sucky situation

So here I have been wanting to build a deck and I bought the pier stones and been putting them in place for the past couple of weeks. I had family in town, work, Dr appt, a funeral, and everything in between keeping me from finishing. I had already set my beams but sitting out in the sun a week or two they warped so badly they were unusable. So my ISP went down yesterday meaning I was dead in the water to work from home. I go to Lowes to pick out half the load of lumber so I could get started and was surprised to find out how much of it in stock was warped too. It took a while to pick out enough choice pieces to get it done. It became apparent that to build a deck in the summer, you gotta build it fast or hire a crew. So I busted my butt and built a 12 x 16 deck in 11 hrs in the midday heat because I was afraid it would warp too badly to last another day or so, BUT I have a great little hang out now for kicking back this weekend. I just need to add the railings and lattice work and some furniture.

    Pics soon

Thread should be titled = Treated wood really sucks these days.

I built a fence this winter (Jan) and it took forever to sort through the lumber and get good boards.

It seems to me that at lowes/HD they need to figure something out. Does not matter which store or what kind of lumber it is - I often spend more time find decent pieces then planning the project.

Sometimes I have to buy wider and rip it with the table saw to get good stuff.

Some of the smaller home improvement/home & garden stores are way better about keeping quality lumber around. I like prowling around those.

Are their prices comparable? When I get back into it, I need to check into those a little better. Even if the prices are 5-10% higher it would be worst it. The knotty, warped crap sucks.

By and large, they're comparable. I mean smaller regional chains, btw. What side of the metroplex are you on?
