My Tile Project

I borrowed a nice MK wet saw from a buddy. I would recommend a good saw for anyone doing a floor project, but I'm not sure if it's needed for the smaller backsplash tiles. I'll be doing countertops/backsplash in the spring, so be sure to post up pics of yours so I can check it out.
Make sure you have a good, strong corded drill to mix the quickset and grout. I thought I was going to burn out my trusty Milwaukee drill mixing up those 50lb batches of quickset.
Other than that, it's just a matter of good measuing and planning...and good ol' fashion elbow grease.

For back splashes, I would just use the pre mixed acrylic thin set that you can get at home depot or lowes. That way you won't have to worry about wasting anything and can take your time doing the job correctly.

Also, it helps to have a good, sharp-tip permenant marker to draw your cut lines. I tried colored pencils and regular sharpies, and the water from the wet saw would wipe it off as I was making the cut. It helped to let the ink dry in the sun some, but that can take more time than you want.
I eneded up saving around $50 on 8 bags of quickset vs buying the pre-mixed, but given that each bag was 7 minutes of pretty tough mixing, my back would have preferred that I sprung on the pre-mixed stuff in the bucket. I think it takes longer to set-up (48hrs vs 24hrs), and that played a role in my decision too.
And when applying and washing the grout, I found that it's easier to be sloppy initially and then just worry about doing a thorough job of sponging it all up during clean-up. And if you have someone bringing you fresh buckets of water non-stop while you're cleaning, you can get away with only doing it once, and then following up with a quick mopping.
Those were a couple of tips I learned during my first shot at this...hope it helps someone out some.
