People in Europe learn languages because of simple geography. If everyone in Oklahoma spoke a different language, you and I would probably know it quite well for that same reason.

This isn't about learning another language. I speak 2 languages. It's about her saying tha the US will fall to China.

I was just speaking generally off Mikes post. Like I said, even though I don't completely disagree with her(I don't think we'll ever be under the CONTROL of China, but it would certainly benefit everyone to know Mandarin seeing as they are increasingly a world power to be reckoned with)I think that was a pretty dumbass thing for a teacher to say in the school newspaper.

I heard a news piece on NPR radio where parents are enrolling their young kids into Chinese language courses in schools now because they think it will give their kid an advantage in the future. And some colleges are now offering Chinese language courses too.

At first I was pissed off about it, but the more I thought about it - there may be an advantage to be had by learning Chinese (or some other foreign language). Multi-lingual people are in high demand in the business world right now, and there is no way that China is going to go away anytime soon.

So, there are a couple of ways to think about it. The first way is to wring your hands and moan about the changes that are happening to our country and culture. The second way is to adopt to those changes and move forward. And that may mean that you need to learn a foreign language in the future to be successful, or don't learn and get bypassed by people that did.

I saw it on the news a few weeks ago and I feel the same way. It might come in handy in business. I might feel the same way about spanish if I wans't so pissed at the messicans for the shit they are doing.

many people who seemed to have failed in life so badly in the workplace, go on to be professors. I think this somehow gives them renewed faith by having people be forced to listen to their BS dribble.
Go to any college, you won't have any problem finding a few so completely and obviously diluded in their own rationalizations of how things work in the real world.
Schools are like a mecca for these people. They are completely protected from having to prove any real fruition of their work. Like with success actually earned or delivering real world results where obstacles exist. Plus there is a steady stream of fresh minds to plunder away with their unrelated(to the class) nonsense.

My ex step sister speaks 3 Asian languages and was an interpreter at the Olympics in Beijing. She just married a Chinese national and has lived in China for the past 6-7 years teaching English. She actually started to learn Mandarin in HS in Florida. That said she makes squat for income and lives well but everything is compact because of the overcrowding of their culture.

Hell I have a guy I work with who has a Chinese GF he is visiting right now. She is a Exec at IBM or someshit over there and makes the equivalent of $300(USD) a month. My buddy makes near twice that a day here and he is going to retire over there as a king with a 20 year his junior Chinese wife. lol

I don't see a problem with them teaching Mandarin. I am on the fence about the fire training program. I do think it's great that they are offering skill sets for kids these days. That said, they wouldn't HAVE to offer trade school type programs if money was better spent on the actual education of the nation's youth. If American youth weren't so fucking stupid (product of a failed public school system, and failure on the parents part equally), they wouldn't need trade schools to learn a trade.

Her comments are absurd, however. It's one thing to think it, or even to discuss among other teachers behind closed doors. But to say it in the paper? Even more ridiculous that her comment didn't send up a red flag to the editor. I mean, that's just common sense shit.

a lot of kids just give up because they don't do well in traditional courses... but those kids might shine at mechanical, welding, etc. they could get a job right out of highschool making $30-40k+

but without those vocational classes, most will waste a year or two at community college and end up in some shitty retail job

I think that the fire academy is a decent idea, but film studies? Seriously? Also, aren't the chinese all learning engrish in school? Why the fuck should we learn chinese if they're learning engrish?

That teacher is an idiot to think that we'll be under China's control. As far as I've seen, China hasn't shown any interest in occupying any country.
