  • our HS newspaper? WTF????

This was in our HS news paper yesterday. The article was talking about adding new classes and programs. Some of the programs they are thinking about adding is the fire academy, film studies, and Chinese. One of the foreign language teachers said this...

" I truly believe that one day we'll be under the control of China so everyone should learn Chinese and begin to understand their language and culture."

    I'm beyond pissed right now.

Don't entirely disagree, but it is a pretty dumbass thing to put in a school newspaper.

Think of the poor schmucks who already don't speak English. Now they're gonna have to learn Chinese too.

The "defeatist" attitude of that teacher says a lot. If my high-schooler had come home and quoted a teacher saying that in class, it would have been ugly.

I really can't figure out why we have funding issues.

The fire academy is actually a great idea. It gives the kids that complete it the opportunity to take the certification test and and inside track to employment with AFD.

The odds are good that this teacher has an obama sticker on her/his Prius.

China can't even force their own people to speak Mandarin, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'll be long dead before a communist government takes over the US.

I heard a news piece on NPR radio where parents are enrolling their young kids into Chinese language courses in schools now because they think it will give their kid an advantage in the future. And some colleges are now offering Chinese language courses too.

At first I was pissed off about it, but the more I thought about it - there may be an advantage to be had by learning Chinese (or some other foreign language). Multi-lingual people are in high demand in the business world right now, and there is no way that China is going to go away anytime soon.

So, there are a couple of ways to think about it. The first way is to wring your hands and moan about the changes that are happening to our country and culture. The second way is to adopt to those changes and move forward. And that may mean that you need to learn a foreign language in the future to be successful, or don't learn and get bypassed by people that did.

I've never understood the disdain in this country for learning another language. The more you know, the bigger chance at being successful you have. Most people in Europe speak many different languages. Those countries seem to be doing better at holding on to their nationalism than we have in the last 10 years. This country is slowly getting left behind.

This isn't about learning another language. I speak 2 languages. It's about her saying tha the US will fall to China.

People in Europe learn languages because of simple geography. If everyone in Oklahoma spoke a different language, you and I would probably know it quite well for that same reason.

And China won't rule anything as long as they are communists.

The european analogy is not a great one, as stated above. Ever notice how many other nationalities DO know English? Tons of europeans know english quite well, and most don't really "need" too.
