Board Votes to Lay Off All Providence Teachers

    Published February 25, 2011

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The school board of the state's financially troubled capital city has voted to send termination letters to all of its nearly 2,000 teachers after city officials said the move would give them "maximum flexibility" to make budget cuts.

State law requires school departments to notify teachers by March 1 if they'll be laid off the following school year.

Providence teachers received notices of potential layoffs before the board met Thursday night and voted 4-3 on sending termination letters. The notices don't mean the teachers will lose their jobs, but the vote means some of them could at the end of the year. The vote give the city the opportunity to terminate as many teachers as it deems necessary for budgetary reasons, but the city hasn't indicated how many that could be.

Providence Teachers Union President Steve Smith had said earlier the decision was "beyond insane" and created chaos and anxiety among teachers.

More than 700 teachers packed the Providence Career and Technical Academy gymnasium Thursday to tell school officials their hearts were broken, their trust was violated and their futures as teachers were jeopardized, The Providence Journal newspaper reported.

The financial problems in Providence, the state's biggest city, have caused enough alarm at the state level that Gov. Lincoln Chafee has instructed two of his top fiscal officers to meet with city officials. A recent audit showed Providence, which has about 175,000 residents, had nearly depleted its rainy-day fund and overspent its budget last year by more than $57 million.

Mayor Angel Taveras last month created a Municipal Finances Review Panel to review the city budget across all departments. The panel will offer recommendations to the mayor in the next two weeks.

Taveras said in a statement that although he was sensitive to the uncertainty and anxiety that many teachers felt when they received the layoff notices, "putting Providence back on solid financial footing will require shared sacrifice across our community."

This is what happens when you give money away to lazy people.

No mention of republican or democrat? That's because the governor is an "Independent". Hmmm.

Pretty crazy. I have a lot of family in that town. My dad and sister were born there. Everything is expensive as hell, pretty much to Cali standards. My grandmother had a tiny little house that was worth something like half a million bucks. Completely nuts.

No, it was a union negotiation that any teacher on the chopping block had to be notified prior March 1st. So they sent letters to every one of the motherfuckers. Now that obligation is fulfilled, a large majority will be hired back, after they figure out what needs to be done.

That's fucking ridiculous. I understand a majority of them may be hired back, but you have got to be fucking kidding me. Schools are overcrowded as it is, and on average around the country spending on schools should be tripled. Find the money elsewhere instead of stealing it from the future of our children, and our childrens' children, etc. Fuck New England.

TRIPLE? It's proven time and again that throwing money at public education doesn't work. Teachers in Rhode Island average $57k a year. They spend about an average of about $13k per kid (it ranges from $9k-$20k depending on district). The schools are average. As a contrast, my little city here spends about $7500 per kid, and most schools are "exemplary", with a few "recognized".

If that what it takes to kick their union to the curb, so be it. There will be plenty of applicants available for future rehiring.

We spend more per child than anyone else in the world and have lower educated children than most if not all first world countries.

Never put good money after bad. Time to address the inefficiencies of the public education system as a whole rather than papering over the flaws with more dollars.

Triple? Are you off your f'in rocker?

Ridiculous? The state did what was necessary. I can't even comment on "tripled", talk about ridiculous.

I'd prefer that we redefine what our educational needs for this country are, and where we want to progress, and rebuild the system. We're operating industrial style schools in a post-industrial world. The fact that we can't fund the system directly correlates to the fact that we're putting our youth through an arbitrary education process, and turning out people with no marketable skills whatsoever. Too many people are spending the first few years out of highschool trying to figure out what to do with themselves, when most anyone could tell you what they were interested by 14-16. Why not start them on the most appropriate path as early as possible? Why this regimented system that turns out so many unskilled, unmotivated people?
ZOMBIE REAGAN FOR PRESIDENT 2016!!! heh
