New bill puts illegals on federal lawmakers' doorsteps

HOUSTON -- The heated controversy over illegal immigration could soon land on the doorstep of federal lawmakers, literally.

A new bill in Austin says that, if the feds won't pick up a suspected illegal immigrant who is convicted of a crime, then they should be left at the office of the nearest congressperson.

Undocumented immigrants, like everyone else, often serve shorter sentences for smaller crimes in county jails. After an inmate is released, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are supposed to take the person into custody. Often though, ICE doesn't.

“Our local law enforcement is forced to let them go. It could be at county line, which some of our sheriffs do, or it could be in your neighborhood,” said Rep. Lois Kolkhorst, R-Brenham.

In frustration, the lawmaker has introduced House Bill 1455. It allows local law enforcement to "release or discharge the illegal immigrant at the office of a United States senator or United States representative."

“ICE may be more responsive to them than our local police and sheriff,” Kolkhorst said.

Outside the state capitol, activists were rallying, chanting the familiar “Si, se puede” or “Yes, we can.”

They want to legalize the undocumented, and are not happy with the proposal.

“That's laughable. So that means congresswomen and congresspersons would be enforcing immigration laws?” asked Network for Humans Right Board Executive Director Fernando Garcia.
    Kolkhorst said yes.

“The administration has told us this is a federal issue, not a state issue, so we're going to let them help us with that,” she said.

ICE compliance is uneven. It is poor in some counties, but good in Harris County, which houses 10,000 inmates. Each month, 1,000 inmates are flagged for questionable immigration status and ICE agents pick them up daily.

Supporters want that to be the case in every county.

ICE spokesman Greg Palmore said the agency doesn't break down the numbers of those in their custody based on who end up deported, and or released in Texas

who's going to pay for it? you cant just leave the illegal at the office someone is going to have to be payed to transport it, and then keep an eye on it while its at the office. all this costs money.

I am all for doing something about illegals, but our state is out of money, we need to figure out a few ways to save money before we start spending more.

How is it going to be more expensive or take more man power to drive them down the street to an office than it would be to drive them to the county line? Can you give me any solution to ending illegal immigration that doesn't involve spending money? If you can, I'll vote for you.

Well, that's the federale's problem now, isn't it. If they want to be the only ones to enforce immigration laws, then let them worry about what to do with the illegals. Maybe, once one of the harden criminals rapes or kills a worker there, they will decide to do something.

I like how you decide what costs money and what doesn't. According to you, anything that goes against the leftist agenda costs too much money or isn't feasible. Yet blatant mental retardation costing billions in a time of money crisis is just fine. Illegal immigration is on its way out the door in this country, people are getting fed up. Wait and see.

Instead of laying off teachers, put them behind the steering wheels of the school buses we aren't going to use either and convoy their asses with the MExicans to Mexico.

                Win-fucking-win!

I think they just need to set up a trebuchet at the border and launch them on over.

so you want to drop them off in front of john cornyn's office, and then what? let them wander around the neighborhood? of course not, you are going to have to pay someone to watch them. not to mention the fact that as soon as a a few lawyers from the ACLU show up they will file multi million dollar law suits on behalf of the illegals.

there is a very simple solution to solving the problem of illegals, go after the people who are hiring and employing the illegals. the state controls business licensing, and makes all the rules. the state needs to say for every illegal that is caught its going to cost employers $1 million dollars, and the state needs to pull their business license immediately so that they can not conduct any business in the state until that money is paid. that way if the companies want to take legal action they will be forced to do so after paying the fine.

That looks like tons of fun.

                      Maybe we could do this.

Sort of want? I think ICE should be doing their fucking job and deporting them to whatever country they came from, not ship them to their congressman's doorstep. HOWEVER if this bill passes then the congressmen would be inclined to make sure the ICE did their job. Its a reaction measure they are doing. It's not to ACTUALLY ship them there but for them to react.

Exactly. Cannonballer is all about giving organized labor tons of money but as soon as you start talking about spending $3 on illegal immigration then he points out budget issues.

Let me let you in on a little secret... Who is going to enforce that? Man the phone line for reports? Then you still haw illegals that have to be detained, fed, transported, etc. Your idea is ok, but you seem to think it will be free, and that's severely misguided.

the state is already organized to monitor businesses because of taxes. ICE conducts raids all the time in texas, and they notify local officials. all the hard work is already done, all that is left is to count the illegals, multiply that by a million, and pull their business license.

this does not cost anything, in fact the state will probably make a few hundred million dollars in the first few days that this legislation is in place. as for the illegals, once they find out that they can not work here they will move elsewhere.
