I haven't argued a single thing about the awesomeness of Democrats, I think they're despicable as a whole. The only problem here is your simple mind has interpreted historical discussion as pro-Dem/anti-Rep, despite repeated assurances that wasn't what I was vouching for.

Back to discussion, as I mentioned before, there was significant disparity within the parties and it so happened that southerners did make up a majority of the Democratic party. If you control your statistics for party AND which side of the mason Dixon line they come from, you get a more accurate picture of the political landscape.
