  • GOP congressman takes down colleague's sponsored 'art' depicting police as pigs

A Republican congressman took matters into his own hands Friday and personally removed a painting depicting police officers as pigs that a colleague had allowed to be displayed at the U.S. Capitol complex.

A Republican congressman took matters into his own hands Friday and personally removed a painting depicting police officers as pigs that a colleague had allowed to be displayed at the U.S. Capitol complex.

“I was angry,” Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., told FoxNews.com. “I’ve seen the press [reporting] on this for about a week or so. … I’m in the Marine Corps. If you want it done, just call us.”

Hunter said he walked over to the artwork Friday morning with a few colleagues and unscrewed it. He then delivered it to the office of Rep. Lacy Clay, D-Mo., the congressman whose office had allowed the piece to be displayed. The painting, hanging since June, was done by a high school student who had won Clay’s annual Congressional Art competition.

The piece drew outrage, however, from law enforcement groups and fellow lawmakers.

As for whether the painting will stay down, Hunter said: “Lacy can put it back up, I guess, if he wants to … but I’m allowed to take it down.”

Clay’s office has not yet responded to a request from FoxNews.com for comment.

Apparently it has been taken down and put back up a number of times.. It's all about publicity, I'm sure.

I'm not a big fan of the artwork, but this is a 1st amendment issue, and that is the perspective of the artist, like it or not.

Is it though? They didn't impede his right to paint it, and I would assume that displaying it falls under privilege instead of right.

Yeah he can display it all he likes on the outside of his house or on some property he owns. Doesn't seem appropriate for government property.

So then should it be all or none as far as what is hanging on the walls? Who dictates who gets the 'privilege' and who doesn't, and what is it based on?

While it may not be a true legal issue regarding constitutional law, the spirit of 1st amendment is still a concern, to me.

The kid entered the contest, and one of the results of winning is that your art will hang there for a certain period of time. Presumably he otherwise followed all of the rules of the competition, what reason does any other congressman have to take it down?

Because it makes them uncomfortable? Bullshit.

That's just how I feel about it.

By the way, am I missing something, or is there more than one 'pig'? The cop closer to the foreground looks like a horse. The one on the right side looks like a person (badly drawn). In fact, the 'pig' looks more like a wild boar (I know, same basic idea). On top of that, the 'citizen' in the center is a wolf..

So is he really depicting all cops as pigs?

Looks like he started it out as a Zootopia theme.

Kinda what I was thinking, those are funny looking "pigs" and the one guy is a horse. Maybe he was saying some people are acting like "animals"?

Anyone one ever notice that everyone yells freedom of speech until the snowflakes are offended by something? Then they need their safe space. I mean they took down the American flag at some point in a school. WTMF!

That panther has an awfully long nose. Hell, if that's the case the cop may be a rhino, and he just didn't know they have a single horn..

The Latest: Capitol architect says pig painting breaks rules

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on Congress (all times local):

                              by AP13 Jan 2017 7:25 p.m.

A GOP congressman’s office says a painting on Capitol grounds that has stirred controversy will come down Tuesday after a review by the Capitol architect.

Washington Rep. Dave Reichert’s office reports he has been informed that the architect has determined the painting violates House Building Commission rules.

The painting depicts Ferguson, Missouri, with the image of a pig in a police uniform aiming a gun at a protester. It was among hundreds completed by high school students that are featured in a tunnel leading to the Capitol.

Reichert says the painting is a slap in the face to men and women who put their lives on the line every day.

Defenders of the painting say its removal would be a violation of the First Amendment.
