  • Washington is Quietly Reinforcing Europe’s Northern Flank

Much is being done to counter Russian ambitions in the High North, and yet much more remains to be done.

The recent stream of senior U.S. defense officials to Nordic countries underlines American concerns about potential friction in northern Europe, and Washington’s efforts to boost defense and deterrence there. Defense Secretary Ash Carter stopped in Norway in early September, while his deputy Bob Work, who has been to the region three times over the last two years, paid an early-October visit to Finland’s capital, Helsinki. Shortly thereafter, Air Force Secretary Deborah James made her own trip across the region. (Go back to last year, and Senate Armed Services Committee chair John McCain was in Norway and Sweden to discuss regional security.)

The multi-country itinerary reflects the realization that boosting defense and security cooperation there requires more than a one-size-fits-all approach. For starters, Norway and Denmark are founding members of NATO and treaty allies of the United States, while Sweden and Finland are only NATO partners and have no formal defense agreement with the U.S.

Nine hundred US troops will be deployed to Orzysz, north east Poland, in April from the 3rd squadron of 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment which is based in Vilseck, Germany.

It's not Europe that's on a war footing. It's the US that's on a war footing for Europe.

Is that a typo about Russia's largest nuke? Is it really called Satan 2?

I feel really fucking sorry for Europe in all of this. But then, they lay somewhere between brought-this-on-themselves, and should-have-done-more-to-stop-it. Either way, when the shooting starts, they will all be gone in weeks.

Yeah, but it's a MIRV with 10 heavy warheads or 15 light warheads... it's not like one single Tsar Bomba.

The US has the Trident II which can carry 14 warheads (and an Ohio class sub carries 24 of them). They have W88 warheads which are 475 kt.
The RS-28 Sarmat can supposedy carry 10 warheads at 750 kt each.

Meh, not much of a difference. Anyway, the bigger worry it seems is that with a nuke payload it likely couldn't reach TX, but with conventional warheads it could. Intesting article here: Why You Shouldn't Be Worried About Russia's Satan 2 Missile That Can Destroy Texas

Here's what a 750 kt air-burst Satan II would do in Dallas

A 10 warhead MIRV could totally take out DFW...

but this whole "destroy Texas" thing is nonsense (with one at least)

The fact that a discussion like this is on the table should show everyone how fucked up our leadership is these days.
