  • Panama Papers...global corruption exposed.

11.5 million documents, 214,000 shell companies: The Panama Papers are the largest data leak journalists have ever worked with.

In the past 12 months, around 400 journalists from more than 100 media organizations in over 80 countries have taken part in researching the documents.
2.6 Terabytes of information going back to the 70's that have connections to politicians, drug smugglers, celebrities, athletes, and much more.

The company at the center of all these stories is Mossack Fonseca, a Panamanian provider of offshore companies with dozens of offices all over the world. It sells its shell firms in cities such as Zurich, London, and Hong Kong – in some instances at bargain prices. Clients can buy an anonymous company for as little as USD 1,000. However, at this price it is just an empty shell. For an extra fee, Mossack Fonseca provides a sham director and, if desired, conceals the company’s true shareholder. The result is an offshore company whose true purpose and ownership structure is indecipherable from the outside. Mossack Fonseca has founded, sold, and managed thousands of companies. The documents provide a detailed view of how Mossack Fonseca routinely accepts to engage in business activities that potentially violate sanctions, in addition to aiding and abetting tax evasion and money laundering.
Someone leaked all this information to the press. They have secretly worked all year investigating and researching this enormous amount of information and are just now releasing it. Not all of the information has been leaked yet and already there are effects.

12 heads of state directly tied to the leak:

    Mauricio Macri, president or Argentina.

Bidzina Ivanishvill. ex PM of Georgia

Sigmundur something something, PM of Iceland.

Ayad H. Allawi, ex PM of Iraq.

Ali Abu al-Ragheb, ex PM of Jordan.

Hamad Jasim J.M. Al-Thani, ex PM of Qatar.

    Sheik Al-Thani, Emir of Qatar.

HRH Prince Salman, King of Saudi Arabia

    Ahmad Al-Nirghani, ex-president of Sudan

Sultan Al-Nahyan, president of the UAE.

    Pavlo Lazarenko, ex-PM of Ukraine.

    Petro Poroshenko, president of Ukraine.

Hidden in 11.5 million secret files are 140 politicians from more than 50 countries connected to offshore companies in 21 tax havens. Explore dozens of stories in this interactive feature.

Apparently, there are many from the US on the list and are soon to be revealed.

Jürgen Mossack's father worked as a spy for the CIA after WW2, where he served in the Waffen-SS. This kind of looks like his company took over the reigns after Noriega was arrested (who happens to be in a Panamanian prison right now).

Why do you assume that? I'm pretty sure this is just getting started.

Süddeutsche Zeitung shared the data with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, a nonprofit organization, along with reporters from over 100 news agencies around the world, including The Guardian, the McClatchy newspapers, Fusion and other outlets.

Those media outlets are expected to publish more articles based on the Panama Papers in the coming days.
Editor of Süddeutsche Zeitung responded to the lack of U.S. individuals in the documents, saying "Everything will be released without fear or favor"

The real question is, will this change anything for us?

Yeah a few countries will riot and force the resignation of various people involved(e.g. Iceland), but what will this really change for us spineless Americans?

If they have an R by their name they will go to prison. D and get a handshake and cabinet nomination. We'll get rid of half of them, then focus on football and american idol.

This will top the crazy number of prosecutions and incarcerations after the financial crash in '08!

So I was curious to see how much this was being covered. I went to each of the big news outlets and did a search for PANAMA PAPERS on their home page.

                              ABC-1 hit
                              NBC- 25 hits
                              CBS - 5 hits
                              CNN- 3 hits

If it is such a big deal, doesn't seem to be garnering too much attention.
