Attorney General Jeff Sessions Is Done With Sanctuary Cities
Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced on Monday that he will not only withhold federal funding from sanctuary cities, but that the cities would be required to pay back money given by the federal government.
While speaking at the White House, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said that they are prepared to dole out $4.1 billion in federal funding, but it won’t be going to sanctuary cities.
Many sanctuary cites have already taken a stand against immigration enforcement, not only cutting service to their citizens to pay for the shortfall, but also funding programs to help people stay in the country illegally.
What the cities weren’t expecting though is Attorney General Sessions’s latest move: fining sanctuary cities for past money given by the federal government.
Washington Times reports that funding for several federal programs given out during the Obama administration required compliance with federal law, but the Obama administration refused to enforce that rule. Jurisdictions which violated the rules were ineligible to receive those funds, and Sessions said that the federal government would claw back the money from sanctuary cities if they had to.
“When cities and states refuse to help enforce immigration laws, our nation is less safe,” Sessions said. “Failure to deport aliens who are convicted of criminal offenses puts whole communities at risk, especially immigrant communities in the very sanctuary jurisdictions that seek to protect the perpetrators.”
“The Department of Justice will require that jurisdictions seeking or applying for DOJ grants to certify compliance with [U.S. Code 1373] as a condition of receiving those awards,” Sessions said, “I strongly urge our nation’s states and cities ad counties to consider carefully the harm they are doing to our citizens by refusing to enforce our immigration laws, and to rethink these policies.”
