Also, take it into account that this high minded speech was given 14 days after Benghazi, when they were blaming the attacks on a YouTube video, jailing the maker, and funding commercials in Pakistan apologizing for the video on behalf of the US.

The reason for that speech was to pander to Islam. The rest of the words his speechwriter put together were merely window dressing.
