There is a time, not that long ago, that all of this would've been considered treason and punished accordingly.

The real issue is that most of the population is so stupid (yes stupid), and desperate for government handouts, they can only say and think, "orange man bad."

I don't think you know what the word treason actually means in a legal sense or what it takes it prove a charge of treason in court. Under US code without a declaration of war there can be no charge of treason.
