amend the laws and call it a civil union license or cohabitation certificate. basically a contract between two eligible persons. everything else stays the same.

Example, When I was elected you would go to jail for shooting cops, they changed the law and now shooting cops is A-OK, if I think that is morally wrong, I guess I should just stand down? If it was your job when you got elected to put people in jail for shooting cops and now, based on your moral position, you are still attempting to put people in jail for shooting cops(even though it is now legal in your example). Then I would say "Yes, you should."

Of course, that's ignoring some key differences in the scenarios in order to make them analogous.

A specific reason I've heard given for this specific scenario is that there is an understanding that everyone commits sins. However, they are opposing condoning the acceptance of another living and/or reveling in their sin. Most other sins they, in their own perceptions, don't support or endorse. So, they are against all sin but only oppose sins they feel they could be understood as endorsing/supporting.

The idea I've always been told is that since the bible only ever discusses(what they believe to be) marriage in terms of male/female only and that homosexuality is an abomination in and of itself, that same-sex marriages must be a sin by extension.

To simplify:

Same-sex marriages is not mentioned in the bible and most people interpret the bible as defining marriage as opposite-sex, therefore it's a sin by defying God's definition.

That depends. The act of homosexuality is stated to be an abomination. As I'm told the message of the new testament is one of love, it would be unloving to commit an abominable act upon another. Therefore, it would still be sinful behavior because the act of homosexuality is an unloving act.
