I'm surprised Obama forced him out. He seemed to be perfect for what the President believes in.

Since this is Obama we are talking about it's probably going to be someone black and possibly female. I'd be happy with Admiral Michelle Howard getting the job. She's more than qualified and fits his criteria.

There isn't any precedent for a member of the active military to serve on a cabinet position. The highest uniformed position is going to be Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. I'm not sure there is a law stating the position must be held by a civilian but this country does have a long tradition of the military being ultimately run by a civilian leadership..
I was thinking about Petreaus. He was an active general when Obama appointed him as CIA director and probably did both jobs concurrently. He did technically retire a month prior to being sworn in but there was a transition period.Last edited by BP; 11-24-2014, 09:45 AM.

From the NYT article..
he officials characterized the decision as a recognition that the threat from the militant group Islamic State will require different skills from those that Mr. Hagel, who often struggled to articulate a clear viewpoint and was widely viewed as a passive defense secretary, was brought in to employ.
