The Democrats just gave themselves five million votes.

None of them will actually vote. They are alienating the center right, and even some of the center left.

This. They are absolutely guaranteed 242 votes, in the last six elections they have always carried the same 242 votes. Wisconsin's 10 can go either way right now since the GOP has been making progress there but that's still 232 solid blue votes.

Romney was a very popular governor from a very blue state and didn't win any of the New England area votes. He still lost 332/206, 65 votes short.

The GOP needs to keep all of the states they had last time plus win Florida, Virginia and Wisconsin and still find 13 more votes. Iowa and Colorado are on the fence but so is Georgia (the wrong way).

With yesterday's proclamation, I expect a slight surge of both numbers in the next election cycle. That means CA will still be blue as always, but could cement Florida for the Democrats (the FL presidential race was 50.01% Dem, 49.13% Rep). Also, other battleground states could see reversals of Democratic lost ground with a spike in Latino voting.

I'm still convinced that this is the sole reason for Obama's big executive order announcement - the Latino vote in 2016. Sure, he personally doesn't give a shit, but a lot of Democrats that lost an election in 2014 sure do.

I hope like hell they roll out Hillary in 2016. Nobody - NOBODY - wants a mean, old, fat white woman in charge.

Objectively looking at what he said, I can't say I disagree with the idea. There are millions of people already here in this country, contributing to the economy; families with kids trying to scrape by that couldn't wait and hope for better days where they lived. I can't fault a person for doing what they need to do for survival and the betterment of their family situation.

This seems like a good middle ground idea, and we sure as hell need some sort of action. The immigration problem in this country has reached absurd heights, and I don't see a reason to turn people away who want to contribute. New people bring new perspectives and new ideas, and along with that comes innovation, something this country used to be at the forefront of. These people brave terrible danger to be here, danger most of us pissing around on this site will never comprehend. I think getting them on the right path to citizenship is the right thing to do, both for them, and us.

Same here. But the Constitutional protocol is, law created by Congress is enforced by the President. Congress did not come up with the law the President wanted, so he has chosen instead to selectively enforce existing law as he personally sees fit. That is what is unacceptable.

From what that story above says it's just a temporary status change, not citizenship. This will not give them the right to vote, just make them legal residents (for now) and allow them to work and remain here legally.

If (or when) they make the effort to become naturalized citizens (assuming it is allowed), then it will.

Of course, this could motivate Latinos that are already legal citizens to vote blue..

Are you suggesting that those granted amnesty will vote illegally? If so, that is a potential issue whether or not they are given a clean legal status. As such, I wouldn't expect that to change to the tune of 5MM votes.

And honestly, regarding Dems opposing voter ID laws, I think they do that because they know that a large majority of their "constituents" don't have a problem breaking the law, and are already pulling some shady shit.

Not that there aren't also Republicans doing similar.
