  • Obama Cancels Tomahawk, Hellfire Missile Programs

Two of America’s most effective and efficient weapons system will get the cut by the Obama Administration, leaving us vulnerable and more exposed to her enemies.

The Navy’s premier attack missile, the Tomahawk, was used by Barack Obama in March 2011 to enforce a no-fly zone in Libya and support rebels. On March 19, he fired 112 at Libyan targets.

Despite that success, the Tomahawk, along with the Hellfire air-to-ground attack missile, are scheduled to be phased out as a “Cold War” weapon we no longer need.

“It doesn’t make sense,” Seth Cropsey, director of the Hudson Institute’s Center for American Seapower, told the Free Beacon. The move, he said, is “like running a white flag up on a very tall flagpole and saying, ‘We are ready to be walked on.’”

If someone were trying to “reduce the U.S. ability to shape events” in the world, Cropsey added, “they couldn’t find a better way than depriving the U.S. fleet of Tomahawks. It’s breathtaking.”

The Obama Administration has plans to cut the military to pre-World War II levels,” putting the United States in great danger.

Under Obama’s budget proposals, the Navy, which as recently as last year had plans to buy 980 more Tomahawks, the primary cruise missile used throughout the fleet, will see purchases drop from 196 last year to just 100 in 2015. The number will then drop to zero in 2016.

    What the fuck.

I swear he is asking for us to be attacked so that he can declare martial law. He's also helping out his crazy ISIS friends. Two birds with one stone.

        What a Grade A Asshole.

I know this is absolutely horrible to say, but I really hope that we get kicked in the nuts again on his watch. Perhaps the loss of thousands would wake some of these voting zombies up. People need to fear his mentality of dropping the pants on our defensive abilities.

Does anyone know if we're replacing them with anything? There is a right and a wrong way to reduce DOD budget, stripping our arsenal is not the right way IMO.

wasn't the navy quoted saying rail guns aren't a replacement but a supplement to cruise missles?

Idk, but I actually just messaged my cousin about it. He's working on the guidance system for it. You're probably right, though.

When I was working at TI/Raytheon supplying components for the various missile programs, there were ususally a few classified missile programs in various stages of development from new design to early stages of development to actual production. These were behind the wall programs and were numerous amongst the various defense contractors, not just Raytheon.

It would not surprise me one or more of these programs would be ready for prime time in the near future to replace the Tomahawk or a similar missile. I went thru the Tomahawk assembly line out in Tucson one day on a trip out there and it is indeed huge. These assembly lines can be configured for new missiles, so getting it ready for a new variant would be not out of the ordinary.

Isn't the Hellfire still used on today's drones? "Cold War" relic, indeed.

They've been modified/updated just like the Tomahawks. The CIA doesn't have to declare a budget and they don't advertise their inventory. There are probably a few thousand more of them laying around than congress knows about.

The UK has a nice system they've designed to fit F-35s so there is a decent chance we'll just buy theirs to replace the Hellfires.

As for the cruise missiles the Tomahawk was a great system but it's nearly obsolete now. China and Russia have systems that can shoot them down pretty reliably and they'll sell them to anyone we plan on attacking. We'll probably have something scramjet powered in the future to counter the Russian/Indian BrahMos-II systems. They'll be coming into service about the same time our next system should be.

I think we drilled a few into the sands of Somalia the past few days!

Russia sold cold war-era armor to countries we have a high chance of operating in? Better get rid of the weapons designed to take them out.

I think they're being replaced with a more modern weapon. I work at Raytheon and have heard no ill words about the missile leaving. But again I'm also not on the Airbourne side of house.
