  • Germans supplying massive amount of guns to Kurds

Interesting to see the Germans stepping up to plate on this one:

    In German, but translates to:

For the first time, the Federal Republic of Germany delivers weapons in a war zone.

The Kurds in northern Iraq are to get anti-tank missiles and machine guns for the fight against ISIS, adopted a ministerial meeting chaired by Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Sunday evening.

German weapons in a war zone was previously a taboo, but because of the barbaric acts of terror militia IS in Iraq, the government is making an exception.

The weapons - including 40 machine guns, 500 "Milan" - anti-tank missiles, thousands of assault rifles of types G3 and G36 and 10,000 hand grenades. The "Milan" can destroy the armor of vehicles in up to two kilometers away. Total value of delivery: about 70 million euros.

    8000 G36s
    8000 G3s
    8000 P38s
    200 Panzerfaust 3s
300 shoulder fired anti tank weapons
    40 MG3s
    10,000 hand grenades
    8 million rounds of ammo

The weapons are to go directly to the Kurdish autonomous region in northern Iraq to support the struggle of the Kurds against ISIS. The Kurds do not have to pay anything for the weapons. It is not a commercial arms exports, but a so-called "countries levy" of the Bundeswehr, which is not made available to the Kurds in accounting.

For those that don't know, the Kurds have no de-facto nation, but there is a region they control that is colloquially known as Kurdistan. They are a progressive people, letting women hold important positions, allowing freedom of religion, and they even have their own currency, schools, and government bodies.

Some more digging shows more ordnance is going in as well:
    Truck WOLF, unprotected - 40
    Truck Wolf, semi-protected - 20
    Trucks UNIMOG 2 to - 40
    Tank truck - 1
    Dingo 1 - 5

Six German soldiers are already in the Kurdish capital Erbil to coordinate the German aid deliveries and train the Kurds.

    Other Equipment - Number
    Radios - 700
    Combat Helmets - 4,000
Metal detectors for demining - 20
    Mine probes - 30
    Toolkits ammunition disposal - 40
    Night Vision Infrared - 680
    Vests - 4,000
    Field kitchens - 25
    Tents - 125
    Double Telescopes - 1,500
    Ballistic Goggles - 4,000
    Personal medical equipment - 270

In addition, the federal government is giving another 50 million euros in humanitarian aid.

That's awesome of them. The Kurds are very good people.

The only potential issue here is that the Kurds and the Turks don't like each other very much. Turkey is also a member of NATO. There are good reasons to not arm the Kurds to the teeth. Unfortunately the situation is dire enough to warrant Germany's actions. It is a damn shame Obama won't do this. The Kurds are one Islamic sect that are VERY friendly to the US.

The Kurds are actually calling all Coptic Christians, Jews, and Muslims to help them fight ISIS. They call all Kurds back to Kurdistan to defend its new to be nation.

Propaganda goes both ways with ISIS.

Good to see them getting involved but wouldn't be surprised for them to end up in ISIS' hands just like so much of the weapons cache we left behind.

I think the West will now back the Kurds actively so as to be in the fight, but be absolved of responsibility.
