It's kind of sad, actually, that you have put up an impenetrable wall to the message of Christ. We've all seen how churches can be used to manipulate people for their own selfish and malicious reasons. But Christ didn't do that. And you are fucking WRONG about how Westboro Baptists and Fred Phelps have "quite rigidly stuck to the tenets set forth in the bible."

"Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, they say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more."

He helped polarize the nation on the issue and helped it become a civil rights issue. Once that happened, there was no turning back. Fred Phelps, through his hate has brilliantly failed.
    I agree.

You can't just cherry pick parts of it that suit your ideals. It either all applies or none of it does, it's either the word of god or it's not, and it's either literal or metaphor. Given the way the text is written, of course. You can point to passages that say "love thy neighbor" and all the happy horseshit that most modern christians decide to cling to and I can point out passages where a completely contradictory statement was made.

It's supremely entertaining that you condemn churches, yet the "word of god" was written by those same churches.

Cool. Show me where Jesus Christ commanded his followers to condemn anybody.

Hey, no matter what, if a human gets involved it's tainted by sin. Everyone has an agenda - even you. I understand and accept that, and that includes the messages delivered by the various religions over the centuries. I have read the teachings of Jesus and drawn my own conclusions.

It would be stupid of me to think that you are all hypocrits. My stance on the topic is that you're good not because of your religion, but in spite of it. I'll pass on church, but I'm down for lunch if that's ok with you.

You start from a flawed position. Absolutely nothing I show to you in the bible will change your stance on the topic.

in the preview for the series next week the pastor said "here at fellowship we are not full of hypocrites, we always have room for one more". I'm "good" because of how i was raised. I'm certain going to church on sunday had some to do with that, but so did getting my ass whipped when i needed it and knowing that i and i alone am responsible for my decisions. I dont care if/who you worship, love, hate it really has nothing to do with me. Going or not going to church makes neither of us any better than each other. I wake up every morning and try to be as good a person as i can be and make sure my son does the same. i think that is the important thing. Romans 3:23, i know it and i believe it.

                  god bless.

I didn't realize it was an all or nothing situation.... I'll wait for him to respond, thanks.

It was an offer to give you some insight and then a some lunch and drinks afterwards to talk about your thoughts.

And did you forget where you are? All of our opinions are matters...

Most churches do as well. They rely heavily on the old testament (law) and throw in some new testament (grace) when it bolsters their message. This isn't a continuous behavior, but it is largely present.

Exactly. And this where a lot of the problems come from.
