Shit, it's easy to make that kinda scratch if you have a fast car and half decent radar detector. I did it.

Those were the "good" days pre-2000 when gas was around $1 per gallon, pizza shops paid *MORE* than minimum wage, there was typically no tip destroying "delivery charges", and the economy was good so people were ordering more.

$500 to $800 per week cash was common, and you still got a paycheck and your per run rates too.

The devil in the details was you still had to buy gas, maintain/repair/replace the vehicle..... and it was YOUR @ss if you hit someone as the pizza shops typically would try to put all that burden on the driver.

Now the economy isnt as good, pizza places cater to the lowest and cheapest customers with their price points, most customers think the delivery fee goes to the driver in lieu of the tip, shops still pay nearly the same per run re-imbursement rates, most drivers are typically paid waiter style "tip-credit" wages, gas is 3x higher, and municipalities are cash strapped looking for ways to increase revenue with stricter enforcement of speeding.

Today a full time driver ( unless they are single ) is lucky to make just enough to not qualify for food stamps even in the best of areas -- All while tearing their car up for the benefit of the company and customers

2. Docking someone`s pay like that in the food service industry will guarantee you get a visit first by the state labor/wage enforcement board as it is illegal. Soon thereafter, you`ll get a notice from a lawyer telling you that you have been sued.

I`ll give you some OF the reasons:

1. You destroy YOUR car... Not the company`s
2a. Tell most insurance companies you deliver pizza... You get cancelled.
2b. If you get the required commercial endorsement it will eat up what you make.
2c. Have an at fault accident...without 2b.. Your insurance co might not pay.
2d. Get injured in that accident... have fun dealing with some of the worst bottom feeding workman`s comp companies out there
3. Pizza Delivery is a dangerous job, and most places will fire you if you carry, or use a weapon to fight off robbers.
4. Dealing with managers whom are willing to work 75 hours a week for poverty wages, are jealous that you make more, Yet they will never deliver.
5. The first of month customers.
6. Douchbag co-workers that cant/wont bathe, wash clothes, or show up to work regularly.
7. Active involvement by the big chains to make more and more of what you should make go into their bank account. ( Tip credit wages, tip theft delivery charges, run rates lower than what was paid 10 years ago, cutting hours when they need not be, etc )

There is a long list, but I`m sure you can see the picture. This used to be a good job where you could sneak a decent life under the radar if you were willing to work nights and weekends all the time. However, the last 14 years the industry has put a lot of effort into turning it into a part time McJob that will zap the life out of you while leaving you broke and angry
