  • General John Kelly's Speech About Two Marines

The mission orders they received from the sergeant squad leader I am sure went
something like: “Okay you two clowns, stand this post and let no unauthorized
personnel or vehicles pass.” “You clear?” I am also sure Yale and Haerter then rolled their eyes and said in unison something like: “Yes Sergeant,” with just enough attitude that made the point without saying the words, “No kidding sweetheart, we know what we’re doing.” They then relieved two other Marines on watch and took up their post at the entry control point of Joint Security Station Nasser, in the Sophia section of Ramadi, al Anbar, Iraq.

A few minutes later a large blue truck turned down the alley way—perhaps 60-70
yards in length—and sped its way through the serpentine of concrete jersey walls.

One of the guys on another forum I visit is apparently one of these Marine's father. These Marines are known throughout the Marine Corps and the sacrifice they made will forever be taught to new Marines. In essence they will live forever.

Powerful account of the last 6 seconds of their lives.

                John 15:133 KJV
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends

They did so for their brothers and did it valiantly together.

Here's health to you and to our Corps
                Which we are proud to serve;
In many a strife we've fought for life
                And never lost our nerve.
If the Army and the Navy
                Ever look on Heaven's scenes,
They will find the streets are guarded
                By United States Marines
                .

God bless those 2 brave men. Without people like them, we wouldn't have our country.

Amazing read. God speed to those brave, real men and their families. Society needs more people with that kind of honor.

                        My sentiments exactly.

We have many of those people right here. God help us all if this country stays on the path it's on.

                              From someone there that day:
I was there. As a matter of fact I was about 300m away when this happened. I heard the crew served open up, my head pivoted towards the ECP and the world went blurry and my bones shook in only that way a high order detonation can produce. Dirt and bits of gravel and metal rained down on me. I saw an F250 flutter through the air like a falling leaf. It was one of the IP trucks with blue doors.

The General mis-characterizes these events. I have heard this version many times. It was not a JSS in town, It was not at the provisional government center or an IP station. It was the fucking North ECP to Camp Ramadi. They were paving the roads on base and the bomb was in a dump truck covered with gravel in a long line of gravel trucks that lined up at the gate every morning. Later that evening I loaded up my truck with chow and water and took it to the combat engineers working feverishly to repair the ECP. Their NCOs lived in the SWA hut next door and they were my buddies. I stood in the crater. it was probably 30ft across and I could not see over the rim. I am 6'5".

Later on after the cell responsible had been hunted down and exploited we learned that the target was the chowhall (a huge tent) or the PX. There was a 3rd country national handling a dog at the ECP. His dog alerted. The driver was ordered out of the truck. When the IPs tried to pull him out of the truck he popped the clutch and gunned it and Haerter and Yale opened up with the 240. The seat had been wired with a deadman's switch. When the driver slumped over dead the truck blew right in front of their gun position.

I was heading to chow after loading up some gear out of my connex. If he had made it through the gate I would have come home in a bag. There is no doubt in my mind that Haerter and Yale saved my life. I think about it often. I have written their families. I probably won't fucking sleep tonight.
