Just cut 20 % of the federal budget NOW ! This would allow those highly skilled, highly motivated, and totally loyal civil service workers the opportunity to work in the private sector. Then the could make more money that they do just being a public servant.

Of course they will. The commissaries are all closing tomorrow, they are only open today to get rid if perishables. In places like Killeen and San Antonio there are going to be thousands of additional people shopping at regular grocery stores. Just using those cities as examples since they are in Texas. FAA employees in the regional office in Fort Worth are heading out the door right now. Controllers are still working, of course, but the entire infrastructure around them is on hold. Most FAA construction and maintenance projects have stopped.
Hopefully they will be paid retroactively for the lost times, else they’ll have to file for unemployment during the shutdown. General contractors will make extra money for shut down, restart, missed days fees. Other contractors are just sol, headed to unemployment office.Comment

As part of the Honor Flight project, World War II veterans have been taken to Washington DC, cost free, to see the memorial erected in their honor on the National Mall.
Due to the government shutdown, National Park Service police put up barriers preventing access. According to Leo Shane III, White House and Veterans Affairs reporter for Stars and Stripes, the veterans knocked over those barriers.

We work 3 days a week and when we miss 1 day because of a low census, we miss 1/3 of out paycheck. Not much we can do about it. This is what happens when you have non-essential jobs with the government. What about all the people laid off and hours cut due to Obamacare? Do they need retroactive payments? NOComment

The government shutdown has forced spy agencies to furlough 70 percent of their civilian employees, according to a senior intelligence official.
The furloughed staff includes both support and intelligence analysts, according to the official.
Furloughs are being ordered across the federal government on Tuesday as officials decide which employees are “essential” and should stay on the job despite the failure of Congress to approve a funding measure.
A spokesman for the director of national intelligence warned the shutdown will hamper the ability of the United States to track threats to national security.
“The Intelligence Community’s ability to identify threats and provide information for a broad set of national security decisions will be diminished for the duration," Shawn Turner, a spokesman for Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, said in a statement.
“The immediate and significant reduction in employees on the job means that we will assume greater risk and our ability to support emerging intelligence requirements will be curtailed."
He said that the remaining intelligence employees who are still on the job "will be stretched to the limit and forced to focus only on the most critical security needs.”
A government official familiar with the military's plans told The Hill last week that the shutdown would be unlikely to affect "core" National Security Agency operations.
According to the Defense Department's shutdown plan, intelligence and surveillance activities necessary for national security are excepted from the shutdown. But the document notes that "general political and economic intelligence unrelated to ongoing or contingency military operations" are not excepted.
