I thought it was the general additude here, that to be a "Citizen" service should be required. aka Starship Motherfucking Troopers.

I think we would have fewer liberal douchebags running around if that were the case for our males. The females are a lost cause. Mandatory sandwich making would be better for us guys.
Oh I think it should be done, just like SK does it. 26 months mandatory service to the country. Everyone from president's kids down to the zero liability voter. No one is exempt.

While I love the book and agree with a lot of points he was making he also points out the double edged sword mandatory service for citizenship has. First you have to find a job for anyone to do, including someone who is parapalegic, for example. They would not be much help in the military. Second, the larger the military gets, the more politicians feel like they have to utilize them for wars. I am on the fence because while I like the idea on the surface, when I look at the entire picture it is hard to justify it. Plus I know plenty non-vets who are outstanding citizens that still understand what this country means.

I would like to start small by amending the constitution that only veterans can hold federal office. It would not solve all our problems (mccain, for example), but it would get rid of alot of them. Public punishments for criminals is another thing he got right, in my opinion.

My friend Saarko from Lower Saxony was a sports coach for a team of kids playing basketball or something because he wanted to become a coach in the future and went to school for it. He said that while mandatory, the experience was a good thing and helped with his career path.

In that book conscription wasn't really there. As I recall the troopers were allowed to bail or desert immediately before dropping into a hot zone.

Unless it changed since I graduated, don't we sti have the option to draft as needed. I remember having fill out some form when I graduated about it

Edit: I just remember it was selective service, which was explained to me very simply as informing the government I was draft eligible.

It wasn't really conscription, but to be a full fledged citizen you had to serve. Only citizens could vote, hold office, own a business, etc; they had a higher standing in the community. Non-citizens basically had fewer rights, but enjoyed all the basic freedoms and protections of the law. I can't remember what the rules were about desertion, but you basically only got one chance to serve; if you quit or didn't show up for basic because you got scared I don't think you were allowed to try again, so it was kind of the same as a dishonorable discharge is today.

Interesting. I reckon I should reread that.

I need to as well; it has been one of my favorites for a long time. Starship Troopers is one of the few movies I wish they would remake so they could get closer to the book. With today's technology I don't think it would be too difficult.

Didn't you have to be a Citizen to have children? That is the best fucking part. Want to be a dead beat and take, take, take, and never contribute to society other than what little taxes you may pay with money we give you anyways? Fine, you will not spawn.

4 years in the Marines did me well. Doesn't end that way for everyone. There are still douchebags in the military and there always will be. But some sort of service to country puts a vested interest in how things are ran. NOTE: Politician is not a career path. It is a service.

I was a 100% just as you described. However, I'm slipping from this mentality the older I get and it is mainly due to corruption of our government.

In my humble opinion, the E-6 and below really do not care about what's going on above his pay grade. It's still a great choice out of high school and frankly most kids could use the discipline and training provided. Even the basics that are taught. I'd bet even a AF boot graduate is more squared away than your typical 17-18 year old college kid.

However, the older I am getting and the more f'ed up I see things becoming from a political point of view - the less I feel like kids should be required to be these dip-shit's political tool. When I joined, I felt like the higher ups were a little more squared away then they are now. (1993 - 1999) I still feel they were when I look back on it. Even if they were more tore up than previous administrations they seemed better than modern options.

It does not make it any less honorable for those that do volunteer - not one single bit. However I am re-thinking my position on making it a requirement.

I don't think so, but might be wrong. I thought one of the characters mentioned he wanted to join and be citizen unlike his parents, but I need to reread it. The one thing that I do remember about that book and children is that parents were held responsible for what their kids did until they were adult; your kid shoplifts and both you and the kid get lashes in the town square. The gov did not tell you how to parent, but you were held responsible for the results of your actions or inactions. I am a parent and I love that idea. Too many shitty parents these days that don't parent. Hell you can get a ticket if your dog attacks someone, why not your kid?

I'd fight if our country was actually at war. I'll be damned if I fight for some other countries civil war. I'll move my happy ass to Canada.

He does this during every congressional session. Rangel did serve and was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart and it was a turning point in his life. However just like every other liberal in office he thinks he knows what's better for everyone.
