  • The Justice for Fallujah Project

So I watched a documentary by Vice on HBO the other night about birth defects in Iraq (which occur at Fallujah General Hospital at a rate of 10 times that of a hospital in Kuwait). They interviewed a veteran who fought in Fallujah and started the Justice for Fallujah project. A US combatant started the project after his service because he was part of the massive siege on Fallujah that killed somewhere between 800 and 6,000 civilians, forced hundreds of thousands to flee their homes, and left much of the city in ruins.

Life for the people who chose to return to their city never improved.

Worst of all, since 2004 there has been a dramatic increase in birth defects, infant mortality, mental retardation, and cancers of all sorts in Fallujah. The birth defects are truly horrifying. Babies have been born with six fingers on each hand, scaly skin, missing limbs, two heads, and there has been one case of a child born with a single eye in the center of his forehead. So far all of the research into the cause of this health crisis--which is prevelent throught Iraq, but most dramatic in Fallujah--suggests that U.S. munitions caused this health crisis by polluting the environment with uranium and other toxic metals. One study has argued that there is “genetic damage” within the population of Fallujah, and the evidence suggests ionizing radiation exposure (most likely from uranium based weapons) as the cause. This has led some to compare Fallujah to Hiroshima and Nagasaki; although the rates of cancers and birth defects are higher in Fallujah. In fact, so many children in Fallujah are now being born horribly deformed or mentally retarded that many women are afraid to try to have families.

We passed a bill that demanded a study be done to look into how much radioactivity is in munitions we use on the battlefield, and our military came back with a two page report that said "we don't know, shut up". I realize war is hell and casualties happen, but do you think that the children should suffer? Should we at the very least make the brass come up with something more than their bullshit two page report? Potentially this puts the soldiers who handle the stuff in danger as well.

Actually, it seems quite the opposite.

Yes, they should. If we have to kill people because you can't overthrow your dictator and spent rounds cause you issues? You should have cleaned up your own house. We had to sign waivers when I was retired that stated I didn't handle DU rounds. When I told them I didn't know if I did or not, they said "Yeah, you didn't, take this pill and sign here."

Pretty sure the people who were being gassed did. When we rode through we were called "Good Good Mister" and told "I love George Bush."

Have you ever thought that they said that because they did not want you pointing your rifle at them? Most humans will say whatever it takes in order not to get shot.
Just a little point of contention.

It's pretty common knowledge that the Kurds were huge backers of the coalition forces....

Considering these were the same kids who tried taking our rifles out of our hands and would get beaten for singing "Good good mister" by the males in the city, pretty sure they didn't care.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services stated in its Toxicological Profile for Uranium, "[n]o human cancer of any type has ever been seen as a result of exposure to natural or depleted uranium." A 1999 RAND study concluded, "there are no peer-reviewed published reports of detectable increases of cancer or other negative health effects from radiation exposure to inhaled or ingested natural uranium at levels far exceeding those likely in the Gulf." Exposures in the Balkans should be no more than those in the Gulf.

Nerve gas, agent orange, white phosporous, depleted uranium, cluster bombs, flechettes, land mines, lead bullets, etc... They were all very effective weapons and we can't use them any more.

We really need to know more about what we are using, if not for thd civilians in war torn countries, then at least for our troops. The military gets away with being above the epa and other agencies and their negligence has been causing illness to troops for years. Stealth aircraft, depleted uranium, and a ton of other stuff is often used without the member's knowledge it is dangerous, and often times people dont even know what they have come in contact with. The military basically gets away with using whatever materials it wants at the expense of soldiers and airmen.

From what I have read, it is generally a load of bullshit.

Was there a big tank battle at Fallujah that we don't know about? That is what DU rounds are used for, armor penetration.

Then they do the token crap like making soldiers put drip pans under all the Hummers they park on concrete. I guess in those cases though it's more for area beautifcation than the environment.
